Cassandra Palmer can see the future and communicate with spirits---talents that make her attractive to the dead and the undead alike. The ghosts of the dead aren't usually dangerous; they just like to talk...a lot. The undead are another matter. Like any sensible girl, Cassie tries to avoid vampires. But when the bloodsucking mafioso she escaped three years ago finds Cassie again with vengeance on his mind, she's forced to turn to the vampire Senate for protection. The undead senators won't help her for nothing, and Cassie finds herself working with one of their most powerful members, a dangerously seductive master vampire---and the price he demands may be more than Cassie is willing to pay. |

This is the first instalment in the Cassandra Palmer series. Cassie has to hide from the vampires, because one of the master vampires, Antonia, wants her. When she is discovered she is saves by someone she thinks is human and her friend. He brings her to the senate where she finds out that mages are after her as well. They think her to be an imposter, because she can see the future and therefore a possible pythia. When the old pythia dies she transfers her powers and position to Cassie, which lead her into more trouble than before. I really liked this book and recommend it to all.

I read the ebook version of this dark fantasy novel. This is one of my all time favourite novels. The journey of the young boy Jack and his friend Oy is wonderful. And a truly scary villian. Possibly one of the best fantasy novels I have ever read.

It's a scary place, a bad place. But you got to go in.""Why do I have to go there, if it's so bad?" "Because," Speedy said, "that's where the Talisman is." "I don't know what you're talking about!" "You will," Speedy said. He took Jack's hand. The two of them stood face-to-face, old black man and young white boy. "The Talisman be given unto your hand, Travelin Jack. Not too big, not too small, she look just like a crystal ball, Travelin Jack, ole Travelin Jack. Here's your burden, here's you cross: Drop her Jack, and all be lost." "I don't know what you're talking about," Jack repeated with a scared kind of stubbornness. "You have to--" "No," Speedy said, not unkindly. "I got finish with that carousel this morning, Jack, that's what I got to do." "But I don't know what to do!" Jack said, as Speedy swung up into the cab of the old truck. "I don't even know what a Talisman is!" Speedy laughed and keyed the ignition. He backed up, turned around, and then the truck was rattling back toward Arcadia Funworld. Jack stood by the curb, watching it go. He had never felt so alone in his life.

A recent legacy made Cassandra Palmer heir to the title of Pythia, the world's chief clairvoyant. It's a position that usually comes with years of training, but Cassie's circumstances are a little...unusual. Now she's stuck with a whopping amount of power that every vamp, fey, and mage in town wants to either monopolize or eradicate---and that she herself doesn't dare use. What's more, she's just discovered that a certain arrogant master vampire has a geis on her---a magical claim that warns off any would-be suitors, and might also explain the rather intense attraction between them. But Cassie has had it with being jerked around, and anyone who tries it from now on is going to find out that she makes a very bad enemy. |

Laural Merlington reprises her role as narrator again for the fifth installment of Armstrong's Women of the Other World series. As far as the audiobook goes, Merlington's narration is once again great, having previously enjoyed her on Dime Store Magic and Industrial Magic. I actually enjoyed this book far more in audio than I did when reading it.
Haunted goes much more into the Fantasy side of this genre than the Urban part. Set in the after life you really have to accept Armstrong's idea of what happen after we die (in this universe at least) and as the setting is not in 'our world' it can take abit of getting used. That's not to say the story isn't great, same brilliant characters, intriguing plot lines and witty dialogue, you just have to suspend reality a tad more in this one than the others.
All in all, not my favourite in the series, but a solid and worth reading addition to it.

As a distraction, the job seems simple enough - only the letter contains a portal to Victorian London's underworld, which Elena inadvertently triggers, unleashing a vicious killer and a pair of zombie thugs. Now Elena must find a way to seal the portal before the unwelcome visitors get what they're looking for - which, for some unknown reason, is Elena. |

The much anticapted return of Elena and the pack!! I have to say I really missed the pack in the other books, having fallen in love with the Women of the other world series through them! While I am a fan of Laural Merlington's narration, I do wish the the narrator from Bitten had been brought back to read this book as in my mind she is the voice of Elena. But Merlington is the woman for the job and she by no means dissappoints.
Like the previous book 'Haunted' Broken ventures slightly more in the fantasy than the urban fantasy. But unlike Haunted, broken is set again in 'our world.' I loved the pregancy aspect to the story as it really shows a different side to both Elena and Clay. I found it abit difficult to get into the whole 'Jack the Ripper' story line to begin with but once i did it was another great mystery thriller from Armstrong! And another fantastic audiobook to add to the collection!
