A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." While they speak, audiences can't help but mull the question: What would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave-- "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams"-- wasn't about dying. It was about overcoming obstacles, enabling the dreams of others, and seizing every moment. It was about living. Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration, and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and created an audio book that will be shared for generations to come. This recording includes an interview with the author. |

Made famous by his "Last Lecture" at Carnegie Mellon and the quick Internet proliferation of the video of the event, Pausch decided that maybe he just wasn't done lecturing. Despite being several months into the last stage of pancreatic cancer, he managed to put together this book. The crux of it is lessons and morals for his young and infant children to learn once he is gone. Despite his sometimescontradictory life rules, it proves entertaining and at times inspirational. Surprisingly, the audiobook doesn't include the reading of Pausch's actual "Last Lecture," which he gave on September 18, 2007, a month after being diagnosed. Erik Singer provides an excellent inflective voice that hints at the reveries of past experiences with family and children while wielding hope and regret for family he will leave behind. The first CD is enhanced with photos. Publishers Weekly.

| Your life has a root core that, once understood, unlocks a powerful force to create the life the way you want. Key questions and an amazingly clear "map" are now at your fingertips so you can "Live by Design." In this groundbreaking work, Dr. Phil challenges you to find your "authentic self" -- that person you have always wanted to be, but were too distracted, busy, or scared to become. Instead, you have created a "fictional self" -- taking on the identity of who you believe you are supposed be. The incongruence between these two selves is what leads you to feel that your life is incomplete, unbalanced, and more difficult than it should be. In Self Matters, Dr. Phil helps you to demystify your self-concept, and learn how to reclaim your authentic self. You can learn to think beyond the excuses and fears that have masked the person you want to be. By facing the cards life has dealt you, you can relearn how to best react to them. Self Matters is one of the most forward-thinking works on self-concept and self-esteem ever published. We get only one chance in this world. Dr. Phil shows all how to make the most of it. KEY ELEMENTS TO IDENTIFY AND BRING INTO ACTION ORIENTED FOCUS INCLUDE: - What are the ten most defining moments of your life?
- What are the seven most critical choices you have made to put you on your current path?
- Who are the five most pivotal people in your world and how have they shaped you?

An interesting concept but not I think doable for most. The author does however give a very interesting glimpse into the world of ofloading work onto third world countries. Whether that fits in with your values is another thing. However it was interesting to read. But I'm not giving up my day job just yet.

Deepak Chopra, Debbie Ford, and Marianne —New York Times bestselling authors and internationally acclaimed teachers—have joined together to share their knowledge on one of the most crucial obstacles to happiness we face—the shadow. These three luminaries, each with a signature approach, bring to light the parts of ourselves we deny but that still direct our life. For it is only when we embrace our shadow that we discover the gifts of our authentic nature. The shadow exists within all of us. It is a part of us and yet we spend most of our life running from it. But far from being scary, our dark side holds the promise of a better, more fulfilling life. Our shadow makes itself known every day. It is the reason we get furious over a friend showing up ten minutes late, yell at our parents or kids when they have done nothing wrong, and sabotage our own success at the worst possible time. Until we are able to embrace our dualistic nature, we will continue to hurt ourselves and those closest to us and fall short of our potential. Combining the wisdom of three experts, The Shadow Effect is a practical and profound guide to discovering the gifts of our shadow. These three authors powerfully pierce the veil of our unclaimed self, releasing us from the past and propelling us on a journey to wholeness. No longer living a half life, we are capable of achieving our dreams and reclaiming the happiness that is our birthright. |

| Self-Esteem, written by Matthew McKay and Patrick Fanning, is a comprehensive program that outlines a number of cognitive-behavioral techniques for the reader to incorporate into his or her recovery from problems with low self-esteem. The book is well-structured and organized in a logical fashion, with the first chapter devoted to a discussion of the make-up of self-esteem followed by a brief summary of how each successive chapter in the book deals with a particular aspect of self-esteem. McKay and Fanning describe self-esteem as the ability to form an identity and then attach a value to it (p. 1). They point out that there is an inherent drive in human beings to judge things, accepting and rejecting them based on a variety of conceived attributes and preconceived ideas. This, the authors argue, is where the danger of low self-esteem lies. When individuals begin judging and rejecting parts of themselves as flawed or inherently bad, poor self-esteem is likely to follow. |

The Element is the point at which natural talent meets personal passion. When people arrive at the Element, they feel most themselves, most inspired, and achieve at their highest levels. The Element draws on the stories of a wide range of people: Paul McCartney, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Meg Ryan, Gillian Lynne, who choreographed the Broadway productions of Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, journalist Arianna Huffington, renowned physicist Richard Feynman, and many others, including business leaders and athletes. It explores the components of this new paradigm: the diversity of intelligence, the power of imagination and creativity, and the importance of commitment to our own capabilities. With a wry sense of humor, Ken Robinson looks at the conditions that enable us to find ourselves in the Element and those that stifle that possibility. He shows that age and occupation are no barrier and that once we have found our path, we can help others do so as well. The Element shows the vital need to enhance creativity and innovation by thinking differently about human resources and imagination. It is an essential strategy for transforming education, business, and communities to meet the challenges of living and succeeding in the twenty-first century. |
