Princes, Frogs & Ugly Sisters Why We Need Fairy TalesSome years ago I was invited to give a presentation to an organization called The Man Panel. I’d been asked to speak about the obstacles men and women tend to run into when they go out looking for a significant other. Just before we began, one of the organizers—a strikingly beautiful young woman in her thirties—turned to me and said: “Just so you know: these people here tonight, they’re all tired of being Cinderellas. And so am I. I want that fairy godmother, and I want that prince to turn up, and soon.” I looked at her and smiled. “It sounds like you only know the Disney version of the story,” I commented. “If you go to the original version—the Grimm brothers’ version—there’s no fairy godmother.” The woman looked shocked, her eyes wide. “No fairy godmother?” she exclaimed. “That’s right. And there’s no pumpkin that turns into a coach, either,” I continued. “What’s more, Cinderella doesn’t sit around waiting for the prince. She takes her courage and she goes out to find him.” “She does?” “She most definitely does, and not just once but three times. The real tale will tell you what you’ll need to do to be successful in love, but you have to know what it says and forget the saccharine Disney version. That version will tell you nothing.” She looked at me and nodded slowly. “I guess I’ll have to take another look at that,” she said. I could give many examples of this sort of conversation, but they’d all point the same way. They’ve shown me, again and again, how we’ve been misled by the sanitized versions of the old fairy tales. We’ve assimilated the commercialized versions, while the real tales—full of wisdom—remain unread. It’s time to redress the balance. If we guide our thinking by referring to the wrong stories, then we do ourselves no favors.

Inside America's Concentration Camps INTRODUCTIONConcentration camps are not indigenous to America. Neither is government sanctioned torture. Both were imported by white immigrants who either had a predisposition to torture and detention, based on cultural experiences in their homelands where torture and detention were accepted means for government to control people of different races and religions, or who, in a darker psychological twist, had been tortured and detained in their homelands and then exiled to America, only to succumb, during times of crisis, to their baser instincts to do unto others as others have done unto them. When you look at U.S. history, it is difficult to avoid the conclusion that for American whose families have been desensitized by generations of abuse, government advocacy of torture and detention was a culturally acceptable means of imposing their will on people of different races, religions, and political beliefs. Of course, the opposite reaction- revulsion to torture, religious and racial persecution, and political imprisonment- was a strong motivator for many immigrants who fled to America to escape those inhumane shackles of spirit that bound them in their homelands. Over the years these three unlikely groups- abusers, abuse victims, and crusaders against abuse- forged a complex witch's brew of cultural significance, one that ultimately came to define the American experience. Clashes based on those opposing views of life were inevitable. Almost from the founding of the Republic, Americans have waged an uncivil war with one another over those defining issues. The War Between the States was fought over slavery, the ultimate poster child for torture and detention. Today, the conflict continues, only this time the conflict is over Red State-Blue State differences about the role of government sanctioned torture of individuals of different races and religions, imprisonment without trial, and the imposition of the death penalty. At its core, government-sanctioned torture and detention are based on racism and religious persecution, with politics usually playing a secondary role. America was never the melting pot it was made out to be by myopic historians who have been slow to dig beneath the surface to identify the deep cultural divisions that have fractured Americans from one century to the next. Those who came to America to pursue economic gain tended to view torture as a legitimate tool with which to protect their wealth (favored were the rack, waterboarding, and the garrucha, which required the victim to be suspended from the celing with weights and pulleys attached to various appendages). By contrast, those who came to America to escape religious and personal persecution understandably viewed government-sanctioned torture and detention as unspeakable crimes that violated all concepts of human decency, although some eventually succumbed to their addictive lure as a means of protecting accumulated wealth. Those two opposing concepts of government mortality have formed the dividing line for the cultural wars that have obsessed Americans for the past three centuries.

Rooted in the Earth PrefaceThree little birds Pitch by my doorstep Singing' sweet songs Of melodies pure and true
-BOB MARLEY, "THREE LITTLE BIRDS" My personal journey to environmental awareness began in the borough of Queens and later led to a bend of the Mississippi River in New Orleans and on to metro Atlanta. I grew up near John F. Kennedy Airport in Rosedale, New York, my beloved neighborhood of concrete, asphalt, ranch homes, and rumbling planes, with my immediate family: my parents, Daphne and Percy Glave, and my brother, Richard Glave. During those early years and continuing into adulthood, I often sprawled out on my parents' bed or sat at their kitchen table, listening to them reminisce about Jamaica, their first home, their "old country," defined for some by Bob Marley and his music. They spoke of my grandparents, born in the 1890s, who lived indirectly and directly off Jamaica's reddish-brown claylike soil, much like the farmers who cultivated the land in the American South. Boss Yates, Percy's stepfather, made his living as an agent for a purchasing association, acting as an intermediary between local banana farmers and international buyers. He married Gladys Gibson, my grandmother. My mother's parents, Cyril and Christene DePass, owned a small farm in Halifax, Manchester, Jamaica, at a distance from their home, where they grew coffee and bananas while fattening pigs, chickens, and cows for slaughter, I traveled to the farm as a child during the 1960s. I remember arriving by plane to the visceral smaells, vistas, and tastes so different from those of New York. On humid afternoons, perspiration covered my neck as I rode a donkey, witnessed a hog bloodily slain and butchered, and peered at yams, potatoes, bananas, and coffee growing in the yard. Water was piped into the house from a nearby well that was filtered by golden fish. Delicate green lizards flitted about the yard. My parents launched my informal nature study during the 1970s when they drove Richard and me to Baker's Camp in upstate New York for our annual weeklong summer vacations. I swam, fished, and rowed on the lake. Every day, I would crawl past the slippery lichen-covered walls of Dead Man's Cave and wander below the shadowed understory of the woods. In the afternoons, I chased deer and chipmunks under and over downed trees, and by evening, I would be sitting on the pier by the lake, kicking my feet, baiting my hooks with worms, and catching and tossing back sunnies- small rainbow-colored fish. I was similarly awed by New Orleans, where I revised parts of this book. This mystifying emerald of a spot on the Mississippi River teemed with snowy egret at the water's edge, and with black swallowtail butterflies, lime green lizards, and weighted banana trees in the city. In the French Quarter, palmetto bugs-giant winged roches-crawled along hte damp walls. In New Orleans I lived at the mercy of rain, humidity, and wind. I watched the sky for darkened clouds. I fled from hurricanes. My memory of my time there is bittersweet since I escaped Hurricane Katrina but left behind a city of people who were very kind to me.
