First Steps in Getting eBooks on Your Sony Reader

Two softwares to install - about five minutes

1. Download Adobe Digital Editions to your desktop or laptop
2. Install Sony eBook Library Software on your desktop or laptop

For the Sony eBook Library, put the CD that comes with your Sony Reader into your CD drive on your computer and follow the prompts.

For Adobe Digital Editions, download the software from the Adobe site. There are a few short steps to do this.

Attention Mac Users: Workaround Required

Sony's eBook Library software is not currently supported directly in the Mac Operating System. It currently requires Windows. You can, however, download DRM eBooks to your Mac via a workaround which can be found by clicking here.

After software is installed: adding ebooks to your Sony Reader

---

To transfer your Adobe EPUB or PDF eBook from Sony Ebook Library to the Sony PRS-505 or PRS-700 Reader please follow these instructions:

1. You will need to have installed both the Sony Reader software from the CD-ROM that comes with your Sony Reader and Adobe Digital Editions
2. Connect the PRS-505 or the PRS-700 to your computer with the USB cable. An Icon will appear in the Menu Bar on the left side of the Sony Reader Library.
3. Select the title you wish to transfer with your mouse pointer. Drag and drop the title onto the Reader Icon in the Menu Bar. Drop the title when a black box appears around the Icon and word Reader.
4. BEFORE unplugging the PRS-505 or PRS-700 from your computer Click on the Eject symbol just to the right of the word Reader in the Menu Bar where you just placed the title. Failure to do so could result in the deletion of the title when you disconnect the PRS-505 or PRS-700.
5. Your Adobe EPUB or PDF eBook is now ready to be read on the Sony PRS-505 or PRS-700 Reader.

Purchase and download ebooks for the Sony Reader

Purchase an Adobe EPUB or Adobe Digital Editions title

1. Enter the title or author name in the Search Badge at upper left of BooksOnBoard HomePage, or Browse the Categories to select a title.
2. Move mouse over thumbnail image and then select Buy Now.
3. Under either Adobe EPUB or PDF ebook Click Add to Cart.
4. If using a Promo Code enter it in the Promo Code space > Save and Update
5. Proceed with secure checkout.
6. If using Rewards Dollars enter them in the appropriate space and Apply Rewards.
7. If not using Rewards Dollars choose payment method, Google Checkout, Credit Card, or Paypal. Continue.
8. Complete Checkout Process and proceed to Click Here to View and Download Purchase to return to your account.
9. From your account select Bookshelf and download your title using the downloadink provided.

To download your Adobe EPUB or Adobe Digital Edtions eBook, please follow these instructions:

1. Click the Download link next to your desired title.
2. Note: A window that says You have chosen to open ebx.etd may pop up. Click Open with Adobe Digital Editions, then click OK.
3. Adobe Digital Editions will open, with a box that says Downloading Document. Wait for the eBook to finish downloading. This should take a few moments.
4. Your eBook is now downloaded into Adobe Digital Editions and is ready to be read or transfered to Sony Ebook Library and the PRS-505 or PRS-700 Reader.

Once downloaded, transfer your Adobe EPUB or PDF eBook to your Sony Reader eBook Library

1. Open your Sony Reader eBook Library from your desktop.
2. Right Click on File and Select Import File. This will open a File Import Badge that displays the files located in your Adobe Digital Editions.
3. Select the file you wish to import into the Sony Ebook Library. Click Open. The file will appear immediately in the Sony Ebook Library.

You must complete the transfer from Adobe Digital Editions into Sony Reader Library BEFORE attempting to load the title to the Sony PRS-505 Reader device

Sony Reader PRS-505 Update if you purchased before August 2008 - This is an older update from August 2008, but if you have not updated since then, this note is important. Newer 505's and the PRS-700 already come packaged with the update.

Sony has released an Update for the Sony PRS-505 Reader which allows that device to support the EPUB file format and Adobe Digital Editions 1.6 or later and Adobe DRM-protected content. The update enables text within PDF eBooks to be reflowed. This will enlarge the text and improve the readability of text-based PDFs. Sony users may now purchase and download BooksOnBoard Adobe PDF and EPUB format ebooks.

Note: Requires installation of BOTH the utility updates for Sony eBook Library Reader software AND installation of the firmware update for the Sony Reader (PRS-505) system

Note: Requires installation of, and authorization with, Adobe Digital Editions 1.6 or later.

Note: Transfer of EPUB and Adobe DRM-protected content to the PRS-500 are not supported.

Getting the free Adobe Digital Editions

To access your EPUB or PDF eBook, you will need to download Adobe Digital Editions. To do this, please:

1. Go to: http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/
2. Click Download Now. If you already have Adobe software (such as Adobe Reader) installed on your computer, nothing may happen. In this case, you will need to click the brown Install button.
3. The screen will say This application can read and write files to your system. Would you like to continue installing? Click Install.
4. Press Yes to download and continue the installation of Adobe Digital Editions.
5. Wait for ADE to finish downloading.
6. A window with the Adobe Digital Editions license agreement will pop up. Click I Agree to continue.
7. Adobe Digital Editions will install (depending on your connection, this will take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes) and the ADE software will open. You can now begin downloading eBooks.

To transfer your Adobe EPUB or PDF eBook from Sony Ebook Library to the Sony PRS-505 or PRS-700 Reader please follow these instructions:
