Recommended Reading Order for A Vintage Magic Mystery
If you love cozy mysteries with a paranormal twist, romantic tension, and a passion for fashion, Annette Blair's A Vintage Magic Mystery is the perfect series for you. The books follow Madeira "Maddie" Cutler, a former New York fashion designer who returns to the charming town of Mystic, Connecticut, to open a vintage clothing shop in a former morgue. Maddie also possesses a unique gift: psychometry, which allows her to see psychic visions of the past when she touches vintage garments.
The series should be read in publication order, as the character relationships, overarching subplots (including Maddie's romance with FBI Agent Nick Jaconetti), and the lore behind her family's magical legacy develop sequentially across the books.
A Vintage Magic Mystery Books in Order
The series consists of six full-length novels published between 2009 (with some sources noting a late 2008 release for the debut) and 2013:
- A Veiled Deception (2009) – Maddie returns to Mystic for her sister Sherry's wedding, only to find a murder victim strangled with a bridal veil and her sister accused of the crime.
- Larceny and Lace (2009) – Maddie opens her shop, "Vintage Magic," and immediately has to deal with a break-in, old bones, and the ghost of Dante Underhill, who begins to inhabit her store.
- Death by Diamonds (2010) – A glamorous murder is tied to a bejeweled vintage dress, and Maddie must sleuth out the culprit.
- Skirting the Grave (2011) – Maddie tackles another stylish investigation when a vintage skirt reveals a dark secret.
- Cloaked in Malice (2012) – The visions from a mysterious vintage cloak help Maddie untangle a complex kidnapping plot.
- Tulle Death Do Us Part (2013) – The final installment in the series wraps up Maddie's adventures, bringing closure to her cases and her romantic life.
Should You Read the Series in Chronological Order?
Since the publication order is identical to the internal chronological timeline, there is no separate chronological list to worry about. Starting with the first book, A Veiled Deception, is highly recommended. Reading them out of order will spoil the development of the romantic tension between Maddie, Nick, and detective Lytton Werner, as well as the secrets Maddie uncovers about her witchy mother and her own abilities.
