Where to Start the Zion Series

Bodie and Brock Thoene’s sprawling Zion saga spans 22 published novels across four distinct subseries: Zion Chronicles, Zion Covenant, Zion Legacy, and the Zion Diaries. Because the authors wrote these subseries out of chronological order—publishing the post-war Jerusalem books before going back to write the European prequels—readers frequently debate the best starting point. There are two primary paths you can take to tackle this massive historical epic.

Option 1: The Chronological Reading Path (Recommended)

For the most seamless narrative experience, we recommend reading the series chronologically. This path allows you to experience history as it unfolded, beginning in pre-WWII Europe and moving steadily toward the dramatic battle for Jerusalem in 1948. Starting chronologically helps you understand the deep backstories, traumas, and relationships of key characters before they arrive in the Holy Land. Under this method, you will start with the first six books of the Zion Covenant, read the Zion Diaries and the rest of the Covenant, and then progress into the Zion Chronicles and Zion Legacy.

Option 2: The Publication Reading Path

If you prefer to experience the saga exactly as the authors introduced it to the world, you should start with the Zion Chronicles. Beginning with The Gates of Zion (1986) drops you directly into the tense, post-WWII struggle for Jerusalem. Once you are hooked on the fate of the characters, you then step back in time with the Zion Covenant prequel series to discover how they survived the rise of the Nazi regime in Europe.

The Four Subseries Explained

To navigate the Zion universe, it helps to understand how the four subseries fit together historically and thematically.

1. Zion Covenant (9 Books)

Set between 1936 and 1940, the Zion Covenant is a prequel series that details the dramatic rise of the Nazi regime and the build-up to World War II in Europe. The story follows a diverse cast, including Elisa Lindheim, a Jewish violinist playing under an assumed name, and John Murphy, an American journalist. The first six books (published from 1989 to 1991) take readers from the prelude in Vienna to the tragic fall of Warsaw. The Thoenes returned to this subseries in 2005, publishing three final novels that cover the evacuation of Dunkirk and the German occupation of Paris.

2. Zion Diaries (2 Books)

Published between 2010 and 2011, the Zion Diaries serves as a companion series set during the height of World War II. These books focus on the harrowing personal trials of characters escaping the Nazi Blitzkrieg. The Gathering Storm follows Loralei Kepler as she flees Brussels, while Against the Wind follows Elisa and John Murphy as they make the agonizing decision to send their children to safety during the London Blitz. Note that while a third book titled Their Finest Hour was planned and is listed in some databases, it was never published.

3. Zion Chronicles (5 Books)

This is the original subseries that launched the Thoenes' careers as historical fiction powerhouses. Set in 1947 and 1948, the Zion Chronicles focuses on the end of the British Mandate and the immediate buildup to the declaration of the State of Israel. The story centers on Ellie Warne, an American photojournalist who gets caught up in the smuggling of ancient biblical scrolls and the Jewish struggle for survival, and Moshe Sachar, a brilliant scholar who becomes a key strategist for the Haganah.

4. Zion Legacy (6 Books)

The Zion Legacy series picks up the narrative thread exactly where the Zion Chronicles ends, focusing on the immediate aftermath of Israel's statehood declaration on May 14, 1948. This subseries offers a highly detailed, almost day-by-day account of the battle for the Old City of Jerusalem. It also features a unique dual-timeline structure, particularly in The Jerusalem Scrolls, which weaves first-century historical events into the 1948 narrative.

What to Know Before You Start

The Zion series is highly regarded for its detailed historical accuracy, blending real-world events and historical figures (such as Winston Churchill, David Ben-Gurion, and Adolf Hitler) with fictional protagonists. Because the stories are deeply rooted in Christian theology and biblical prophecy, the characters frequently grapple with themes of faith, divine providence, and the spiritual significance of Israel. While the subseries can theoretically be read as standalone sets, the overlapping character arcs mean you will get the most enjoyment by sticking to either the chronological or publication order rather than jumping between books randomly.
