The Recommended Reading Order
For the best experience, we highly recommend reading the Gray Man series in publication order. While Court Gentry's missions are mostly standalone espionage adventures, the overall story features recurring allies, ongoing romantic interests, and a continuous character arc that evolves significantly from book to book. Jumping around will spoil major plot points, especially regarding Court's relationship with the CIA.

Chronological Caveats: What About Sierra Six?
Readers often wonder if they should read Sierra Six first, given that it details Court Gentry's origin story and his first mission as part of the Golf Land team. While the flashback sequences are set 12 years in the past, they alternate with a modern-day storyline that relies heavily on character development, trauma, and relationships established in the previous ten books. Because of this dual-timeline structure, reading Sierra Six out of order ruins the emotional payoff and character progression. Stick to the publication order for the best experience.
Spin-offs and Crossovers
Mark Greaney's Gray Man series consists entirely of full-length novels. Unlike some other thriller universes, there are currently no official short stories, novellas, or literary spin-offs written by the author. Furthermore, while Mark Greaney is well-known for co-authoring Tom Clancy's final books and continuing the Jack Ryan series, Court Gentry does not exist in the Ryanverse. The two series are completely separate, meaning Gentry has never met Jack Ryan or his associates on the page.
The Netflix Adaptation
In 2022, Netflix released a film adaptation of The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling as Court Gentry, alongside Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. While the film makes several changes to the plot of the debut novel, it captures the fast-paced, explosive nature of the series. If you've watched the movie, you can dive straight into the books starting with the first novel to experience the original, more grounded story.
