Reading order

The Recommended Reading Order

While you could technically read only the numbered main novels focusing on Jason, doing so will leave you extremely confused later in the series. The spin-off novels and character-focused side quests introduce crucial avatars, secondary characters, and key plotlines that merge directly back into the main storyline. Because of this, reading in publication order is highly recommended by both the author and the fan community.

Awaken Online Books in Order

Here is the complete order of the books, combining the main sequence, character side quests, and the Tarot trilogy:

  1. Catharsis (2016) – Main Series Book 1. Focuses on Jason Rhodes entering the game and becoming the Avatar of Darkness.
  2. Precipice (2017) – Main Series Book 2. Continues Jason's struggles to build his undead kingdom.
  3. Retribution (2017) – Side Quest #1. Focuses on Riley's perspective and her path to becoming the Avatar of Water.
  4. Evolution (2018) – Main Series Book 3. Returns to Jason's story as real-world issues bleed into the game.
  5. Apathy (2018) – Side Quest #2. Focuses on Eliza Zhao and how she becomes the Avatar of Light.

Chronological and Narrative Caveats

Why the Tarot Series is Essential

The Tarot trilogy (Ember, Flame, and Inferno) stars a completely different protagonist, Finn Harris, a grieving engineer who plays the game under very different circumstances. While it initially feels like a separate story, it is a critical piece of the puzzle. Finn and Jason eventually meet in Hellion, and their opposing ideologies drive the main plot forward. Do not skip this trilogy before reading Hellion.

The Importance of Side Quests

Unlike optional novellas in other fantasy series, the Awaken Online side quests (Retribution, Apathy, Unity, and Happy) focus on the secondary characters who become the avatars of the different magical affinities. Skipping them means missing the entire origin stories of the party members who stand alongside Jason in the main books.

Frequently Asked

QCan I skip the Tarot trilogy in Awaken Online?

No, you should not skip the Tarot trilogy. Although it stars a different protagonist, Finn Harris, his storyline merges with Jason's in Hellion. Skipping it will make the events of Hellion and subsequent books hard to follow.

QAre the Awaken Online Side Quests optional?

While they are labeled as "Side Quests," they are functionally essential to the narrative. They tell the origin stories of Jason's companions (Riley, Eliza, Frank, and Alex) and explain how they unlocked their respective Avatars.

QWho is the main protagonist of Awaken Online?

The primary protagonist is Jason Rhodes, who becomes the Avatar of Darkness. However, the Tarot trilogy is told from the perspective of Finn Harris (Avatar of Fire), and the side quests feature other viewpoints like Riley, Eliza, and Frank.

QWhat is the recommended starting point for the series?

You should start with the very first novel, Catharsis. Starting with any other book will cause you to miss key world-building and character introductions.

QWhat is the latest book in the Awaken Online series?

The latest book is Crucible (Book 11 of the reading order / Book 8 of the main sequence), which was released on March 1, 2026.

QIs the Tarot series completed?

Yes, the Tarot series is a self-contained trilogy consisting of Ember, Flame, and Inferno. Its characters and plotlines have since integrated into the main Awaken Online novels.
