Where to Start Your Babysitting Journey
For the absolute best experience, you should start with the book that launched the phenomenon: Kristy’s Great Idea (1986). This introduces the core club members—Kristy, Claudia, Mary Anne, and Stacey—and establishes the setup of the club. Alternatively, if you want to see the events leading up to the club's formation, you can begin with the prequel novel The Summer Before, which was published in 2010 but is chronologically book #0.5.
The Stoneybrook Time Warp: Chronological vs. Publication Order
Unlike most series, The Baby-Sitters Club operates in a famous status-quo time warp. The girls start the series in the 7th grade (Books 1 to 9). By Book 10, Logan Likes Mary Anne!, they enter the 8th grade—and they remain in the 8th grade for the next 120 books! Because of this sliding timeline, chronological ordering is less important than publication order.
