How to Read the Band of Four Series
Written by Ed Greenwood, the legendary creator of the Forgotten Realms, the Band of Four is a self-contained, five-book heroic fantasy series. Set in the chaotic, kingless land of Aglirta, the story follows a classic role-playing-style party: a warrior, a thief, a sorceress, and a healer.
Because the overarching story flows sequentially, the recommended reading order is the publication order. There are no complicated spin-offs, prequels, or co-authored additions to worry about. You should start with the first novel and follow the journey straight through to the end.
Band of Four Books in Publication Order
Here is the sequence of the novels as they were published between 2000 and 2004:
- The Kingless Land (2000) – The adventure begins as Hawkril (the warrior), Craer (the thief), Lady Embra Silvertree (the sorceress), and Sarasper (the healer) form an unlikely alliance to find the lost Worldstones.
- The Vacant Throne (2001) – The newly formed group faces barons, cults, and escalating dangers as they strive to stabilize their chaotic land.
- A Dragon's Ascension (2002) – The stakes rise with the introduction of serpentine threats and mystical plagues sweeping across Aglirta.
- The Dragon's Doom (2003) – The core storyline of the four companions reaches its climactic battle to save Aglirta.
- The Silent House: A Chronicle of Aglirta (2004) – Serving as the final volume, this book is a standalone murder-mystery story set in the same world that ties up loose ends.
Chronological Order vs. Publication Order
Is there a chronological order that differs from the publication order? Not really. The first four novels form a single, continuous chronological storyline. The fifth book, The Silent House, shifts focus to a distinct mystery within Aglirta but still fits best at the end of your reading journey, as it builds on the lore and world state established in the first four books. We strongly advise against starting with the fifth book.
Are There Any Spin-offs or Tie-ins?
Unlike Greenwood’s massive Forgotten Realms library, the Band of Four series is entirely self-contained. There are no additional short stories, shared-universe spin-offs, or co-authored projects. What you see is what you get, making it a perfect, bite-sized epic fantasy marathon.
