The Recommended Reading Order
For the best reading experience, it is highly recommended to start with the main trilogy in order of publication before exploring the prequel. Although Dawn of Eden is set chronologically first, starting with The Immortal Rules allows readers to be properly introduced to the post-apocalyptic world, the mechanics of vampirism, and the main protagonist, Allison Sekemoto, without premature spoilers.
Here is the recommended reading path:
- The Immortal Rules (Book 1) — Published in April 2012. The essential starting point where Allison Sekemoto is turned into a vampire.
- The Eternity Cure (Book 2) — Published in April 2013. Allie searches for her sire, Kanin, and faces a new viral threat.
- Dawn of Eden (Prequel Novella #0.5) — Published in July 2013. Best read after Book 1 or Book 2 to understand the origins of the Red Lung virus and Rabids.
- Zeke’s Letter to Allie (Short Story #2.5) — Released in 2013. A brief, emotional companion piece written from Zeke’s perspective, set between Books 2 and 3.
- The Forever Song (Book 3) — Published in June 2014. The action-packed final book of the trilogy.
Publication Order vs. Chronological Order
Chronological Order
If you prefer to read the events in the exact order they happen in the timeline, you would read the prequel first. However, note that the prequel focuses on different characters (like Kylie and Ben Archer) during the initial outbreak, rather than Allison Sekemoto:
- Dawn of Eden (Prequel Novella #0.5)
- The Immortal Rules (Book 1)
- The Eternity Cure (Book 2)
- Zeke’s Letter to Allie (Short Story #2.5)
- The Forever Song (Book 3)
Publication Order
This is the order in which Julie Kagawa released the books to her readers, and it matches how the world-building was originally paced:
- The Immortal Rules (April 2012)
- The Eternity Cure (April 2013)
- Dawn of Eden (July 2013, in the anthology 'Til the World Ends)
- Zeke’s Letter to Allie (2013, digital extra)
- The Forever Song (June 2014)
What Is the Blood of Eden Series About?
Unlike typical young adult vampire romances, Julie Kagawa’s Blood of Eden presents a dark, gritty, and brutal post-apocalyptic world. Decimated by the deadly Red Lung virus, humanity is divided into scavengers, "blood cattle" kept by vampire rulers, or mindless monsters called "Rabids." When the fierce human survivor Allison Sekemoto is forced to become the very monster she hates, she must embark on a journey of survival, morality, and hope to find a legendary safe haven called Eden.
