The Recommended Reading Order
To get the most out of Britt Montero's journey, we highly recommend reading the series in publication order. While each novel presents a self-contained crime investigation, Britt’s career, relationships, and personal struggles evolve significantly from book to book. Major life events—such as the tragic losses she suffers and the shifting dynamics of the Miami police department—carry over directly between installments.
For instance, the traumatic events of The Ice Maiden (2002) directly set the stage for Britt's state of mind and location at the beginning of the crossover novel Love Kills (2007).

The Cold Case Squad Spin-offs & Crossover
Edna Buchanan expanded her literary Miami universe by introducing the Cold Case Squad in the eighth Britt Montero book, The Ice Maiden (2002). This specialized Miami PD unit, led by Sergeant Craig Burch, later received its own spin-off series. The two storylines officially merged in Love Kills (2007), which serves as both the ninth Britt Montero book and the third Cold Case Squad novel.
If you want to read the entire shared universe in order, you can insert the two standalone Cold Case Squad novels between Britt's eighth and ninth adventures:
- The Ice Maiden (Britt Montero #8)
- Cold Case Squad (Cold Case Squad #1 - 2004)
- Shadows (Cold Case Squad #2 - 2005)
- Love Kills (Britt Montero #9 / Cold Case Squad #3 - 2007)
- Dead Man's Daughter (Britt Montero #10 - 2017)
