How to Read the Brown and de Luca Series
To fully experience the relationship development between self-help author Rachel de Luca and Detective Mason Brown, it is highly recommended to read the series in chronological / publication order. The overarching plot begins with the mystery of Rachel's cornea transplant and the visions she receives from her donor, establishing a story that continues across the novels.
Brown and de Luca Reading Order
The series is divided into two distinct chapters: the original run (Part I) and the sequel era (Part II / Return). Below is the recommended sequence:
Part I: The Core Arc
- Sleep with the Lights On (2013) - The first full-length novel. Rachel regains her sight and teams up with Mason to catch a killer linked to her donor. This book won the 2013 RT Reviewers' Choice Award for Paranormal Romantic Suspense.
- Dream of Danger (2013) - A supplemental novella (Book 1.5) that bridges the events between the first two main books.
- Wake to Darkness (2013) - The second novel. Rachel's visions intensify, pulling the duo into a serial abduction case.
- Innocent Prey (2014) - The third novel, where the team investigates the disappearance of a judge's daughter.
- Deadly Obsession (2014) - The fourth novel, bringing the initial arc to a thrilling conclusion.
Part II: Brown and de Luca Return
- Cry Wolf (2019) - A short novel (Book 4.5) introducing the sequel era and bringing back Rachel, Mason, and her blind bulldog, Myrtle.
- Girl Blue (2019) - The next major novel (Book 5), following a cold case and introducing new characters Holly and Ivy Newman.
- Gingerbread Man (2022) - A crossover novel focused on the backstory of Holly and Ivy Newman, and featuring Vince O'Malley and Reginald D'Voe. Note: Rachel and Mason do not appear in this book.
- The Mermaid Murder (2024) - The newest novel, diving into a cold case about a vanished professional mermaid.
Reading Caveats and Crossover Notes
While the main books are straightforward, keep the following in mind:
- Novellas are key: Do not skip Dream of Danger or Cry Wolf if you want the complete picture of Rachel and Mason's domestic life and relationship progression.
- The Crossover (Gingerbread Man): Gingerbread Man is a standalone thriller centering on character backstories from Girl Blue. If you are reading strictly for Rachel and Mason, you can skip it, but it provides excellent depth to the supporting cast.
