The Recommended Reading Order
To experience the story of Cal Leandros—a sarcastic half-human, half-Auphe—and his protective human brother Niko, you should read the main novels in order of publication. The narrative follows a direct chronological timeline. Here is the recommended path:
- Nightlife (2006)
- Moonshine (2007)
- Madhouse (2008)
- Deathwish (2009)
- Roadkill (2010)
- Blackout (2011)
- Doubletake (2012)
- Slashback (2013)
- Silver and Salt (2014) — A collection of urban fantasy short stories that includes the Cal Leandros story "A Grain of Salt" (often referred to as book 9.5).
- Downfall (2014)
- Nevermore (2015)
Chronological Short Story Placement
If you want to integrate the short stories and anthologies into your read-through for the full universe experience, place them as follows:
- "Milk and Cookies" (Book 3.5): A holiday tale first published in the anthology Wolfsbane and Mistletoe (2008).
- "A Grain of Salt" (Book 9.5): An original short story included in the Silver and Salt (2014) collection.
- "Impossible Monsters" (Book 10.5): A post-series short story featured in the anthology Shadowed Souls (2016), edited by Jim Butcher and Kerrie L. Hughes.
Shared Universe: The Trickster Series
Rob Thurman's Trickster series (consisting of Trick of the Light and The Grimrose Path) is set in the same urban fantasy universe but moves the setting from New York to Las Vegas. While the main characters from both series do not directly cross paths, there are small crossovers with side characters like Robin Goodfellow and the angel Ishiah appearing in both series.
The Korsak Brothers Connection
Thurman also penned the Korsak Brothers series (also known as the Chimera series). While it shares Thurman's hallmark theme of intense, protective brotherly relationships, it is a science fiction thriller and does not share the same supernatural universe as Cal & Niko Leandros.
A Note on the Series Ending
The main series ends on a cliffhanger with the tenth novel, Nevermore. The eleventh planned novel, Everwar, was canceled by the publisher, and the author has since stepped back from public life and active publishing, leaving the main storyline unresolved.
