Where to Start Reading the Calder Saga
Janet Dailey’s legendary Calder family saga spans generations of love, ambition, and rugged frontier life. Because the series timeline jumps between historical origins and modern-day ranching, readers generally choose between two entry points:
- The Historical Start (Chronological): If you want to watch the Triple C Ranch rise from a patch of grass in 1878, start with This Calder Range (1982). This follows the family patriarch, Chase Benteen Calder, as he drives cattle from Texas to Montana.
- The Original Release Start (Publication Order): If you prefer to read the books exactly as they were released, start with This Calder Sky (1981). It introduces a later, 20th-century generation of the family before the subsequent books dive back into the historical backstory.
Publication Order vs. Chronological Order
Here is how the main saga books align depending on how you choose to experience the story. Both options are popular among romance and Western fans.
Option 1: Publication Order
Reading in publication order allows you to experience the story the way readers did in the 1980s, discovering the family history as flashbacks and prequels:
- This Calder Sky (1981)
- This Calder Range (1982)
- Stands a Calder Man (1983)
- Calder Born, Calder Bred (1983)
- Calder Pride (1999)
- Green Calder Grass (2002)
- Shifting Calder Wind (2003)
- Calder Promise (2004)
- Lone Calder Star (2005)
- Calder Storm (2006)
- Santa in Montana (2010)
Option 2: Chronological Timeline Order
If you prefer a linear progression of the family's lineage and ranch building, read in this order:
- This Calder Range (1878 origins)
- Stands a Calder Man (the next generation)
- This Calder Sky (transition to the 20th century)
- Calder Born, Calder Bred (following the modern line)
- ...followed by the remaining books (5 through 11) in their standard publication order, which continue forward in time.
The Calder Brand Subseries
In 2021, the saga expanded with the Calder Brand series, continuing the legacy of the Triple C Ranch. Published after Janet Dailey's passing in 2013, these books explore early twentieth-century conflicts and new generations of the family:
- Calder Brand (2021)
- Calder Grit (2022)
- A Calder at Heart (2023)
- Calder Country (2024)
