The Recommended Reading Order
For the best reading experience, you should follow the publication order of the books. The narrative progresses chronologically, transitioning from the frontier adventures of Elizabeth Thatcher and Mountie Wynn Delaney to the lives of their grown children. Start with the original six-book series before diving into the Return to the Canadian West spin-off trilogy.
1. The Original Canadian West Series
The core series follows Elizabeth Thatcher, a refined Eastern teacher who finds her calling—and love—in the rugged Canadian frontier, before shifting to the next generation in the final two novels.
- When Calls the Heart (1983) – Elizabeth Thatcher heads to the frontier to teach school and meets Royal Canadian Mountie Wynn Delaney.
- When Comes the Spring (1985) – Elizabeth and Wynn marry and adjust to the harsh realities of frontier life.
- When Breaks the Dawn (1985) – The couple faces new tests of faith and survival in a remote northern outpost.
- When Hope Springs New (1986) – Elizabeth seeks strength and community amidst new settings and personal challenges.
- Beyond the Gathering Storm (2000) – The focus shifts to their adopted son, Henry Delaney, who follows in his father's footsteps as a Mountie.
- When Tomorrow Comes (2001) – The series concludes by following Elizabeth and Wynn's daughter, Christine Delaney, as she navigates love and faith during the onset of war in Europe.
2. Return to the Canadian West Spin-Off Trilogy
Co-authored by Janette Oke and her daughter, Laurel Oke Logan, this companion series was released alongside the hit Hallmark TV adaptation. It follows Beth Thatcher, a relative of the original Elizabeth, who embarks on a similar teaching journey in the coal-mining town of Coal Valley.
- Where Courage Calls (2014)
- Where Trust Lies (2015)
- Where Hope Prevails (2016)
Chronological & Character Progression
The story timeline progresses naturally through the publication dates, meaning you do not need to read the books out of order. The first four novels (1983–1986) form a tight, continuous narrative focused on Elizabeth and Wynn. After a fourteen-year publication hiatus, Janette Oke returned to the family in 2000 and 2001 to wrap up the saga with stories centered on their adult children, Henry and Christine.
How the Books Differ from the Hallmark TV Show
While the Hallmark Channel's hit television series When Calls the Heart draws inspiration from Janette Oke's first novel, the storylines diverge significantly. In the television show, Elizabeth Thatcher goes to the coal-mining community of Coal Valley (later Hope Valley) and falls in love with Mountie Jack Thornton. In the book series, the original Elizabeth marries Wynn Delaney and moves to remote northern outposts. The TV series features an expanded cast of characters and subplots created specifically for television, whereas the books offer a more intimate, faith-centered look at a single couple's life on the frontier.
