The Recommended Reading Order
For the best experience, we recommend reading the Carlotta Carlyle series in its original publication order. The novels follow a continuous chronological path where Carlotta’s personal relationships, her PI practice, and the backdrop of Boston evolve over two decades. You have two main choices for where to start:
Option 1: Start with the First Novel (Recommended)
Begin with A Trouble of Fools (1987). This introduces the core status quo: Carlotta as a 6'1" ex-cop who moonlights as a taxi driver to supplement her private investigation business. It also establishes her key relationships, including her mob-connected on-and-off lover Sam Gianelli and her "little sister" Paolina.
Option 2: Start with the Debut Short Story
If you want to read her very first appearance, start with the short story "Lucky Penny" (1985). This award-winning story introduces Carlotta solving a robbery involving her own cab, which precedes the events of the first novel.
Carlotta Carlyle Books in Publication Order
Here is the order in which the books and collections were published. While the novels are sequential, the short stories were published in magazines and anthologies before being compiled in 2015.
- A Trouble of Fools (1987)
- The Snake Tattoo (1989)
- Coyote (1990)
- Steel Guitar (1991)
- Snapshot (1993)
- Hardware (1995)
- Cold Case (1997)
- Flashpoint (1999)
- The Big Dig (2002)
- Deep Pockets (2004)
- Heart of the World (2006)
- Lie Down with the Devil (2008)
- Further Adventures of Carlotta Carlyle (2015) - A collection of the three short stories: "Lucky Penny" (originally published in 1985), "Miss Gibson" (originally published in 1996), and "Stealing First" (originally published in the Boston Globe Magazine).
Chronological and Short Story Caveats
The main twelve novels progress chronologically in real-time, matching their publication dates. The only chronological adjustments apply to the three short stories compiled in the 2015 collection:
- "Lucky Penny" (1985): Chronologically takes place before A Trouble of Fools.
- "Miss Gibson" (1996): Fits comfortably between the novels Hardware and Cold Case based on its original publication year.
- "Stealing First": A standalone mystery that can be read at any point in the series.
Spin-Offs and Other Series
There are no spin-offs, co-authored books, or universe crossovers featuring Carlotta Carlyle. However, readers interested in Linda Barnes' other works can explore her debut series featuring Michael Sprague. Sprague is a Boston-based actor and amateur detective who stars in four novels starting with Blood Will Have Blood (1982). This series is completely independent of Carlotta Carlyle.
