The Recommended Reading Order
The Chanur Saga follows a single, continuous narrative arc, meaning you should read the books in their original publication order. The first four novels form a tightly knit tetralogy centered on Captain Pyanfar Chanur and the human fugitive Tully. The fifth and final novel, set about ten years later, shifts focus to Pyanfar’s niece, Hilfy Chanur.
- The Pride of Chanur (1981) – The starting point. Captain Pyanfar Chanur’s crew rescues a strange, hairless alien named Tully, setting off a galaxy-wide pursuit.
- Chanur's Venture (1984) – The stakes rise as Tully returns to Compact space, drawing Pyanfar and her crew into a web of political intrigue and danger.
- The Kif Strike Back (1985) – The conflict escalates with the treacherous Kif, who kidnap Tully, forcing Pyanfar to make risky alliances to save him.
- Chanur's Homecoming (1986) – The dramatic conclusion of the primary storyline, where the fate of the Hani homeworld and the Compact itself hangs in the balance.
- Chanur's Legacy (1992) – A standalone sequel focusing on Hilfy Chanur, who inherits a new ship and a deceptively simple contract that turns deadly.
Omnibus Editions
If you prefer collecting the series in larger volumes, DAW Books released two comprehensive omnibus editions that cover the entire series in order:
- The Chanur Saga (2000) – Collects the first three novels: The Pride of Chanur, Chanur's Venture, and The Kif Strike Back.
- Chanur's Endgame (2007) – Collects the final two novels: Chanur's Homecoming and Chanur's Legacy.
The Alliance-Union Connection
The Chanur Saga is technically part of C.J. Cherryh's massive Alliance-Union universe. However, it takes place in a distant sector known as "Compact Space"—located in the opposite direction from Earth relative to the main Alliance-Union settings. Because of this geographic and political separation, there is no direct crossover with other books in the universe, and you do not need to read any other Alliance-Union books to fully enjoy the Chanur Saga.
