Where to Start Reading the Charlie Parker Series
For the absolute best reading experience, you should start with the very first novel, Every Dead Thing (1999). This book introduces Charlie Parker's tragic history—the brutal murder of his wife and daughter—and sets up his long path of grief, vengeance, and redemption. It also introduces his crucial companion characters, the deadly and loyal duo Angel and Louis.
While some readers look to the prequel The Dirty South as a chronological entry point, starting there is not recommended. The weight of that book's events is far more impactful if you already know the characters and the future they face.
Charlie Parker Books in Publication Order
Reading in publication order is highly recommended by both fans and the author. This allows you to experience the natural evolution of Connolly's lyrical writing style and the slow, chilling progression of the supernatural elements that gradually transition the series from hard-boiled detective noir to cosmic horror.

Chronological Order Caveats and Prequels
If you prefer to follow the timeline of Charlie Parker's life strictly in order of occurrences, you would insert The Dirty South (2020) at the very beginning of your list. Set in 1997 in a small Arkansas town, this book takes place shortly after the murder of Parker's family but before he returns to Maine to track the "Traveling Man" in Every Dead Thing.
However, reading The Dirty South first ruins the gradual reveal of Parker's character and the slow realization of the forces operating in the background of his universe. It is best enjoyed in its publication sequence as a nostalgic look back that deepens the mythology established over the previous seventeen novels.
Spin-offs and Subseries
Two novels in the main sequence are considered spin-offs as they shift focus away from Charlie Parker to his close allies, the hitman Louis and his partner Angel:
- The Reapers (2008): Focuses on Louis as he becomes the target of a group of elite killers, forcing him and Angel into a deadly confrontation.
- The Nameless Ones (2021): Takes Angel and Louis to Europe to extract bloody vengeance on a group of Serbian war criminals who murdered a close associate.
Additionally, the novella The Reflecting Eye (published in the collection Nocturnes) is a key tie-in that deals with a haunted house and should not be skipped, as it introduces elements that return in later novels.
