The Recommended Reading Order
For the best experience, readers are generally recommended to start with the main series in its publication order. Although the saga spans ancient pre-Flood history up to the New Testament era, starting with the first published book establishes the core rules, theology, and lore of Brian Godawa's supernatural universe.
Here is the standard reading path for the core eight novels, alongside their companion non-fiction research books:
- Noah Primeval (2011)
- Enoch Primordial (2012)
- Gilgamesh Immortal (2012)
- Abraham Allegiant (2013)
- Joshua Valiant (2013)
- Caleb Vigilant (2013)
- When Giants Were Upon the Earth (2014) – Companion non-fiction
- David Ascendant (2014)
- Jesus Triumphant (2015)
- When Watchers Ruled the Nations (2020) – Companion non-fiction
Why Start with Noah Primeval?
While Enoch Primordial is chronologically first as a prequel, Noah Primeval was written to introduce readers to the mythic world, the mechanics of spiritual warfare, and the nature of the fallen Watchers. Starting here ensures you are not overwhelmed by the complex theological concepts introduced later in the prequel.
The Chronological Reading Order
If you prefer to read the series strictly in the order of biblical and mythological history, you can rearrange the first two books. The chronological sequence flows as follows:
- Enoch Primordial (Set before the Great Flood; Enoch's mission as a giant-killer)
- Noah Primeval (The Great Flood and the survival of humanity)
- Gilgamesh Immortal (Post-Flood Mesopotamia and the rise of pagan giants)
- Abraham Allegiant (The Tower of Babel and the calling of Abraham)
- Joshua Valiant (The conquest of Canaan and warfare against the Nephilim)
- Caleb Vigilant (The continuation of the battle for the Promised Land)
- David Ascendant (The golden age of Israel and David's battle with Goliath's clan)
- Jesus Triumphant (The earthly ministry of Christ and His descent into Hades to conquer demonic powers)
Understanding the Companion Books and Spin-Offs
To fully appreciate Godawa's universe, it helps to understand how the companion books and separate series connect to the Chronicles of the Nephilim:
The Non-Fiction Research Companions
- When Giants Were Upon the Earth (2014): A compilation of Godawa's extensive research into the Nephilim, ancient Near Eastern mythologies, and the Book of Enoch. It is best read after Caleb Vigilant or at the end of the series.
- When Watchers Ruled the Nations (2020): Focuses on the "Divine Council" worldview and territorial pagan gods. It serves as a research guide that pairs well with the later books.
Spin-Off Series: Chronicles of the Watchers
This series expands on the spiritual warfare paradigm across different historical and mythological settings, focusing on specific rulers and prophets. Notably, Godawa co-authored Qin: Dragon Emperor of China (originally titled The Dragon King) with Charlie Wen, while writing the remaining books independently. The series includes:
- Jezebel: Harlot Queen of Israel (2016)
- Qin: Dragon Emperor of China (2019) – Co-authored with Charlie Wen
- Moses: Against the Gods of Egypt (2021)
- Judah Maccabee (released in two parts: Abomination of Desolation in 2024 and Against the Gods of Greece in 2025)
- Daniel: Exile in Babylon (2026)
Sequel Series: Chronicles of the Apocalypse
For readers who finish the main Nephilim series and want to see how the cosmic conflict concludes, Godawa penned a direct sequel tetralogy focusing on the first-century Roman Empire and the Book of Revelation. These should be read in order after Jesus Triumphant:
- Tyrant: Rise of the Beast (2017)
- Remnant: Rescue of the Elect (2017)
- Resistant: Revolt of the Jews (2018)
- Judgment: Wrath of the Lamb (2018)
