How to Read Jeff Shaara's Civil War Books

Jeff Shaara's Civil War historical fiction is split into two distinct, self-contained series. For the best experience, you should read each subseries in its chronological order rather than jumping between the Eastern and Western fronts.

The Civil War Trilogy (Eastern Theater focus)

This is the classic trilogy that launched Jeff Shaara's career as a novelist. It is a family affair: the middle book, The Killer Angels, was written by Jeff's father, Michael Shaara, and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1975. Decades later, Jeff wrote the prequel and sequel to complete the arc.

We highly recommend reading this trilogy in chronological order to follow the character arcs of Robert E. Lee, Joshua Chamberlain, and Ulysses S. Grant from 1858 through the end of the war:

  • Gods and Generals (1996) – Jeff Shaara (Prequel covering 1858 to the eve of Gettysburg in 1863)
  • The Killer Angels (1974) – Michael Shaara (Focusing entirely on the four days of the Battle of Gettysburg)
  • The Last Full Measure (1998) – Jeff Shaara (Sequel covering the final phase of the war from 1864 to Appomattox)

Civil War: Western Theater Tetralogy

If you want to read about the often-overlooked campaigns in the West, Shaara wrote a separate four-book series focusing on battles like Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Sherman's March. These books are best read in publication / chronological order:

  1. A Blaze of Glory (2012) – Focuses on the Battle of Shiloh.
  2. A Chain of Thunder (2013) – Focuses on the Siege of Vicksburg.
  3. The Smoke at Dawn (2014) – Focuses on the Battle of Chattanooga.
  4. The Fateful Lightning (2015) – Focuses on Sherman's March through the Carolinas.

The chronological order is Gods and Generals, followed by The Killer Angels, and concluding with The Last Full Measure.
