Where to Start: The Recommended Reading Order
If you want to experience the Commonwealth Universe without spoiling any major plot twists, the absolute best path is the publication order. While the series spans thousands of years, the later-written books rely heavily on concepts and world-building established in the earlier novels.
- Pandora's Star (2004) – The starting point of the Commonwealth Saga.
- Judas Unchained (2005) – The action-packed conclusion of the Commonwealth Saga.
- The Dreaming Void (2007) – Book one of the Void Trilogy.
- The Temporal Void (2008) – Book two of the Void Trilogy.
- The Evolutionary Void (2010) – Book three of the Void Trilogy.
- The Abyss Beyond Dreams (2014) – Book one of the Chronicle of the Fallers.
- A Night Without Stars (2016) – Book two of the Chronicle of the Fallers.
Publication Order vs. Chronological Order
The Commonwealth Universe has a fascinating timeline, particularly when it comes to The Chronicle of the Fallers. Chronologically, the first book of the Fallers duology (The Abyss Beyond Dreams) starts around the year 3326, which is roughly 250 years before the events of the Void Trilogy (which begins in 3580). However, the second book (A Night Without Stars) jumps forward and ends after the events of the Void Trilogy.
Because of this overlapping timeline and the way the technology and mysteries are revealed, reading Chronicle of the Fallers before the Void Trilogy will spoil major revelations. Stick to the publication order for the best experience.
The Subseries Explained
The Commonwealth Saga (Duology)
This is where the main story begins. Set in the 24th century, humanity has colonized hundreds of worlds using wormhole technology. When an astronomer witnesses a star system being enclosed by a massive barrier, a crew is sent to investigate, accidentally unleashing a highly aggressive, expansionist alien species known as the Primes. The resulting Starflyer War forms the backbone of these two massive novels.
The Void Trilogy
Leaping 1,200 years into the future, this trilogy explores the mystery of the "Void"—an artificial micro-universe at the center of the galaxy that is slowly expanding and consuming surrounding star systems. Inside the Void, physical laws are different, and the story alternates between the high-tech Commonwealth and a fantasy-like society inside the Void.
The Chronicle of the Fallers (Duology)
This duology returns to the mystery of the Void, focusing on a planet threatened by the "Fallers"—an insidious alien species that can replicate human beings. It bridges the gap between the original saga and the Void trilogy while offering a complete story of its own.
What About Misspent Youth?
Published in 2002, Misspent Youth is technically the first book set in this universe. It takes place in the near future (the 2040s) and details the invention of the rejuvenation technology that eventually allows Commonwealth citizens to live for centuries. However, it is a very different type of book—much smaller in scale and focused on social drama rather than space opera. Most fans recommend skipping it entirely or reading it as a standalone curiosity after you have finished the main series.
