How to Read the Cork O’Connor Series
For the best experience, most readers and the author himself recommend reading the Cork O’Connor series in publication order. The series follows Corcoran "Cork" O’Connor, a former sheriff of mixed Irish and Anishinaabe heritage, as he solves crimes in the fictional Tamarack County, Minnesota. Reading the books sequentially allows you to experience Cork’s evolving family dynamics, personal struggles, and character growth in the way they were originally written.

Chronological Order vs. Publication Order
If you prefer to read the series chronologically by setting, you would start with the prequel novel, Lightning Strike (2021). This book is set in the summer of 1963 and features a twelve-year-old Cork O'Connor investigating his first mystery alongside his father, Liam, who was sheriff at the time. Reading Lightning Strike first gives you early insight into Cork's relationship with his father and his mentor, the Anishinaabe healer Henry Meloux. However, reading it later in publication order (between Desolation Mountain and Fox Creek) offers a nostalgic look back at the characters after you have already grown attached to them over seventeen novels.
Companion Books, Short Stories, and Standalones
William Kent Krueger has also published auxiliary material that fans of the series will appreciate, along with critically acclaimed standalones:
- The World of Cork O’Connor (2016): An official companion guide containing character lists, insights, and background information on how the series was developed.
- Short Fiction: Krueger has written individual short stories featuring Cork O'Connor (such as "Bait" and "The Dark Horse") that have been published in various mystery anthologies, though they have not been compiled into a single collection.
- Standalone Novels: Highly popular novels like Ordinary Grace (2013), This Tender Land (2019), and The River We Remember (2023) are set in the same Midwest region but are entirely standalone and do not feature Cork O’Connor.
