How to Read the Dark Olympus Series

Katee Robert’s Dark Olympus is a modern, high-stakes romantic fantasy series that reimagines classic Greek myths within a neon-lit, ultra-modern city ruled by a legacy oligarchy known as the Thirteen. Unlike traditional gods, these figures inherit their titles (like Zeus, Hades, Hermes, and Poseidon) through political maneuverings, bloodlines, or deadly trials. The series is celebrated for its high heat, diverse relationships (including queer, polyamorous, and BDSM elements), and overarching political intrigue.

Because the political landscape of Olympus shifts dramatically from book to book, we highly recommend reading the series in publication order. Reading out of order will spoil major plot twists, character deaths, and leadership changes that occur in the background of the individual romance stories.

Dark Olympus Recommended Reading Order

Here is the recommended reading path for the series. This order integrates the full-length novels and the essential novellas where they fit best chronologically and narratively:

  1. Neon Gods (Book 1) – Hades & Persephone (2021)
  2. Electric Idol (Book 2) – Eros & Psyche (2022)
  3. Stone Heart (Novella #0.5 / #3.5) – Medusa & Calypso (2022)
  4. Wicked Beauty (Book 3) – Helen, Achilles, & Patroclus (2022)
  5. Radiant Sin (Book 4) – Apollo & Cassandra (2023)
  6. Cruel Seduction (Book 5) – Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Adonis, & Pandora (2023)
  7. Midnight Ruin (Book 6) – Eurydice, Orpheus, & Charon (2024)
  8. Dark Restraint (Book 7) – Ariadne & Minotaur (2024)
  9. Hades and Hades (Crossover Short) – Hades & Persephone (2021 / read after establishing the world)
  10. Sweet Obsession (Book 8) – Poseidon & Icarus (2025)
  11. Tender Cruelty (Book 9) – Zeus (Perseus) & Hera (Callisto) (2025)
  12. Shattered Gods (Book 10) – Hermes, Atalanta, & Circe (2026)

The Prequel vs. Main Entry Point Caveat

While Stone Heart is chronologically a prequel (occurring before the events of Neon Gods), we suggest reading it after Electric Idol or even later in your binge-read. Starting with Neon Gods is the best choice for readers because it sets up the primary geography of the upper and lower cities of Olympus, introduces the concept of the Thirteen, and establishes the stakes of crossing the River Styx. Stone Heart is a shorter, self-published F/F novella that focuses on Medusa (an assassin for Athena) and Calypso; it adds wonderful flavor to the world but lacks the broad structural introduction that Neon Gods provides.

Chronological Order vs. Publication Order

If you prefer a strict timeline sequence rather than publication release, the chronological order shifts a few pieces around, primarily placing the prequel novella first and moving the crossover short story to the end of the timeline:

  • Stone Heart (Chronological #1)
  • Neon Gods (Chronological #2)
  • Electric Idol (Chronological #3)
  • Wicked Beauty (Chronological #4)
  • Radiant Sin (Chronological #5)
  • Cruel Seduction (Chronological #6)
  • Midnight Ruin (Chronological #7)
  • Dark Restraint (Chronological #8)
  • Hades and Hades (Chronological #9)
  • Sweet Obsession (Chronological #10)
  • Tender Cruelty (Chronological #11)
  • Shattered Gods (Chronological #12)

Book-by-Book Breakdown

Neon Gods

Persephone Dimitriou plans to flee the high-society drama of Olympus, but her plans are shattered when her mother forces her into an engagement with the tyrannical Zeus. Desperate, Persephone crosses the River Styx into the forbidden lower city and strikes a bargain with Hades, a mythic figure most believe is a myth. Their fake relationship quickly ignites into real, dangerous passion.

Electric Idol

Eros, the deadly weapon of Aphrodite, is sent to assassinate Psyche Dimitriou. When he finds himself unable to go through with the hit, he takes a drastic step to protect her: he forces her into a marriage of convenience. Under the constant surveillance of Olympus’s elite, the line between their fake vows and genuine feelings begins to blur.

Stone Heart (Novella)

Medusa, working as an assassin under Athena's command, is dispatched to eliminate Calypso, the mistress of the politician Odysseus. Instead of completing her contract, Medusa falls for her target, leading to a high-stakes, sapphic escape story that showcases the darker underbelly of the city's political deals.

Wicked Beauty

The title of Ares is up for grabs, and a deadly tournament is held to determine the next god of war. Helen Kaspin is offered as the prize to the winner. Refusing to be a pawn, Helen enters the tournament herself. She finds unexpected allies—and lovers—in Achilles and Patroclus, leading to a intense polyamorous dynamic as they fight to survive the games.

Radiant Sin

As the new Apollo, Marcus is tasked with rooting out threats to the city. He needs Cassandra Gataki to act as his fake partner to infiltrate a high-society party hosted by a dangerous adversary. The assignment forces Cassandra to navigate her complicated feelings for Apollo while shielding herself from the deadly political crossfire.

Cruel Seduction

Following a public betrayal, Aphrodite (Callista) finds herself forced into an arrangement with Hephaestus. In a bid for revenge and control, she orchestrates a complex romantic web involving Hephaestus, her former lover Adonis, and Pandora. This story features a highly complex polyamorous relationship structure filled with political gamesmanship.

Midnight Ruin

This story centers on Eurydice, Orpheus, and Charon. Following a traumatic past, Eurydice seeks a fresh start in the lower city, finding comfort and healing in a polyamorous, BDSM-centered relationship with the legendary musician Orpheus and Charon, the underworld's ferryman.

Dark Restraint

Ariadne is trapped in a political arrangement that threatens her autonomy. To escape, she forms a dark alliance with the Minotaur, a shadowy figure hidden in the depths of the city. Their relationship is built on secrets, trust, and shared rebellion against the families ruling the upper circle.

Hades and Hades (Crossover Novella)

This unique short story acts as a crossover between the Hades of the Wicked Villains series (an alternate universe Disney-inspired dark romance saga) and the Hades of the Dark Olympus series. It serves as a fun easter egg for fans of both series but is completely optional to the main plot.

Sweet Obsession

This installment shifts focus to the seas of Olympus, featuring Poseidon and Icarus. It is a high-heat enemies-to-lovers story that explores the maritime borders of the city and Poseidon’s fight to secure his seat among the Thirteen.

Tender Cruelty

Published in late 2025, this novel follows the long-standing enemies-to-lovers dynamic between Zeus (Perseus) and Hera (Callisto). After entering a political marriage of convenience, Hera tries to assassinate Perseus to free Olympus from his family’s bloodline. However, when the city's protective barrier falls, they are forced to stand back-to-back to survive.

Shattered Gods

Released in June 2026, Shattered Gods is the tenth and final novel in the series. It features a triad romance between Hermes, Atalanta, and the returning Circe. As Circe seeks vengeance against the remaining power structures of Olympus, the trio must choose between destroying the city or helping it rebuild for a new era.

What to Know Before You Start

The Dark Olympus series is known for its explicit content, extensive list of tropes (fake dating, marriage of convenience, enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity), and diverse LGBTQ+ representation. Readers should be prepared for dark themes, power struggles, and BDSM elements. Check the author's official website for individual trigger warnings if you are sensitive to specific content themes.
