The Recommended Reading Order for the Partholon Universe
P.C. Cast's Partholon series (frequently marketed as the Divine series) is a rich fantasy saga spanning multiple generations. Because the books were written out of chronological sequence, readers have two primary ways to approach the narrative: the Chronological (Narrative) Order and the Publication Order.
Option 1: The Chronological (Narrative) Reading Order
The chronological order is highly recommended for first-time readers. It allows you to follow the linear history of Partholon, starting with the origins of the world's mythology, moving through the struggles of Shannon Parker, and concluding with the next generation of heroes rebuilding the kingdom. By reading in this order, you avoid jumping forward and backward in time across a century-long gap.
- Divine Beginnings (2009) – A prequel novella exploring Epona's first Chosen ones, establishing the laws and magic of Partholon.
- Divine by Mistake / Goddess by Mistake (2001) – The first novel, introducing Oklahoma teacher Shannon Parker and her sudden transfer to Partholon.
- Divine by Choice (2006) – The second novel focusing on Shannon's struggle between her life in Oklahoma and her destiny in Partholon.
- Divine by Blood (2007) – The third novel, shifting perspective to Morrigan Parker, the daughter of Rhiannon MacCallan raised in Oklahoma.
- Elphame's Choice (2004) – The first book in the next-generation arc, set roughly 120 years after the Fomorian war. It follows Elphame as she rebuilds MacCallan Castle.
- Brighid's Quest (2005) – The final novel, focusing on the centaur huntress Brighid and her search for her true path.
Option 2: The Publication Reading Order
If you want to experience the series exactly as P.C. Cast's original fans did, you can follow the publication order. In this path, you will read the first generation's introduction, skip forward to the next generation, return to complete the original trilogy, and finally read the prequel. Here is the publication sequence:
- Divine by Mistake / Goddess by Mistake (2001)
- Elphame's Choice (2004)
- Brighid's Quest (2005)
- Divine by Choice (2006)
- Divine by Blood (2007)
- Divine Beginnings (2009)
Understanding the Eras: The Divine Trilogy vs. The Elphame Duology
The Partholon saga is divided into two major eras, each focusing on different protagonists and themes while sharing the same mythical mirror world.
The Divine Trilogy
The core Divine books follow Shannon Parker, a modern-day high school English teacher from Oklahoma. After purchasing an ancient vase, she is pulled through a portal to Partholon. In this world, she is the doppelgänger of Rhiannon, the selfish and disgraced Goddess Incarnate. Shannon must step into Rhiannon's role, marry a centaur shaman named ClanFintan, and protect the realm from the monstrous Fomorians. The final book, Divine by Blood, centers on Morrigan Parker, the daughter of Rhiannon, who was sent to Oklahoma as a baby to protect her from evil forces and must eventually return to Partholon to claim her own powers.
The Elphame Duology
Set more than a century after the events of the Divine trilogy, the Elphame books focus on the descendants of the original characters. The land is recovering from the devastating wars, and Shannon's great-granddaughter, Elphame, takes center stage. Born with unique physical traits, Elphame sets out to rebuild MacCallan Castle—the very fortress that Shannon and ClanFintan burned down to defeat the Fomorians. The duology explores themes of identity, prejudices between human-centaur hybrids, and healing a war-torn land.
Chronological Caveats & Publication Quirks
The primary source of confusion for readers is that Cast published Elphame's Choice and Brighid's Quest before she finished Shannon's story. Divine by Mistake (originally titled Goddess by Mistake) was written as a standalone fantasy romance. When Cast returned to the setting, she chose to write about the next generation first. It was only after completing those two books that she went back to write Divine by Choice and Divine by Blood, which fill in the immediate aftermath of Shannon's adventures. Reading in publication order can feel disjointed because you learn about the outcome of the war and the fates of the main characters in the Elphame books before actually reading the sequels that depict those events.
What to Know Before You Start
Cast's Partholon series is known for its blend of contemporary humor, Irish and Celtic mythology, and romance. The heroine Shannon Parker brings a sassy, modern Oklahoma sensibility to a classic fantasy landscape. However, readers should be prepared for mature themes, including romance between humans and centaurs, and high-stakes battles with dark mythological creatures like the Fomorians. While the books are heavily connected by family lines and world-building, the Divine books are best read together as a continuous story, whereas the Elphame duology operates as a distinct spin-off arc that builds upon the history established in the original trilogy.
