Where to Start with Foreverland
For the best reading experience, it is highly recommended to start with the first full-length novel, The Annihilation of Foreverland. This book introduces the central mystery of the island, the virtual dreamworld of Foreverland, and the key conflict between the teenage campers and the mysterious authorities running the site. Starting here preserves the suspense and slowly unravels the conspiracy alongside the characters.
While Tony Bertauski has written two shorter works in this universe—the prequel novella Seeds of Foreverland and the introductory short story Old Bastards—reading them first can spoil elements of the main trilogy's mystery or dilute the impact of the main narrative. Save them for after you have completed the core trilogy to get the most out of the story.
Foreverland Reading Orders
The Recommended Reading Order
This path follows the progression of the main trilogy, followed by the prequel and introductory stories to flesh out the background details of the characters and the technology's origins:
- The Annihilation of Foreverland (Book 1) — Follows Reed and Danny Boy as they wake up on an island with missing memories, promised healing in a virtual world that holds a sinister price.
- Foreverland is Dead (Book 2) — Shifts perspective to six teenage girls in a secluded cabin with no memories, attempting to survive in the wake of Foreverland's apparent collapse.
- Ashes of Foreverland (Book 3) — The survivors of the previous books unite to confront Tyler Ballard, the mastermind manipulating the very nature of their reality.
- Seeds of Foreverland (Prequel Novella) — Follows a young Harold Ballard in the sixth grade, providing crucial context on the origins of the creator and the ideas that birthed the virtual world.
- Old Bastards (Introductory Short Story) — Follows Thomas, who wakes up on a deserted island with no memory and a voice in his head warning him of "the old bastards."
The Publication Order
If you prefer to read the books exactly as they were released, the publication order is almost identical to the recommended path, with the short story Old Bastards published a few years after the rest of the series concluded:
- The Annihilation of Foreverland (2011)
- Foreverland is Dead (2013)
- Ashes of Foreverland (2015)
- Seeds of Foreverland (2015)
- Old Bastards (2019)
The Expanded Universe: The Unreality Saga Crossover
Fans of Tony Bertauski's books should know that Foreverland is part of a larger, interconnected sci-fi multiverse that includes the Halfskin trilogy and the Socket Greeny Saga. While each series can be enjoyed entirely on its own, they ultimately bleed into one another and collide in his Maze trilogy.
In the final book of the Maze series, The Essence of Sunny Grimm (2020), characters from Foreverland (including Danny Boy, Cyn, and Reed) appear alongside characters from Halfskin and Socket Greeny. If you want to experience this massive crossover event with full context, you should read the trilogies in this sequence:
- The Foreverland Trilogy (Books 1–3)
- The Halfskin Trilogy (Halfskin, Clay, and Bricks)
- The Maze Trilogy (The Waking of Grey Grimm, The Hunt for Freddy Bills, and The Essence of Sunny Grimm)
What to Know Before You Start
The Foreverland series blends elements of classic survival stories like Lord of the Flies with high-concept sci-fi thrillers like The Matrix and Inception. Bertauski uses the setting of a virtual dreamworld to explore philosophical questions surrounding identity, the human soul, the ethics of advanced technology, and what truly makes a person real.
The tone is fast-paced, psychological, and frequently mysterious. Because characters repeatedly have their memories wiped or modified, readers are kept off-balance, constantly questioning what is real and who can be trusted. Expect a story that balances action-packed survival with introspective, meditative themes inspired by the author's interest in Zen philosophy.
