Start Here: The Recommended Reading Order
For first-time readers, creators Jason Anspach and Nick Cole, along with the active community, strongly recommend following the original publication order. The narrative structure of Galaxy’s Edge is designed to build suspense, layer mysteries, and reveal details about the galaxy’s history at specific moments. Reading out of order—especially starting with prequels—can spoil key plot twists and diminish the impact of the main storyline.
Season One: The Core Arc
The journey begins with the core Season One novels. These books lay the groundwork for the entire universe, shifting between the boots-on-the-ground perspective of elite Legionnaires and the shadowy underworld of space-faring outlaws. You should read these in the following order:
- Legionnaire (2017): The entry point that introduces Victory Company and their desperate stand on Kublar. This book sets the tone as gritty, realistic military science fiction.
- Galactic Outlaws (2017): A shift in tone toward space opera, focusing on bounty hunters, smugglers, and galaxy-wide conspiracies.
- Kill Team (2017): Blends the military operations with the criminal underworld as the plots begin to converge.
- Attack of Shadows (2017): The stakes escalate as the galaxy moves closer to open war.
- Sword of the Legion (2017): Follows the fallout of previous battles and deepens the mystery of the ancient forces at play.
- Tin Man (2017): A crucial mid-season novella that focuses on the armored combat elements of the Legion.
- Prisoners of Darkness (2017): Builds up the tension as the main characters face capture and impossible odds.
- Imperator (2018): A pivotal book focusing on the backstory of the House of Reason and the rise of the galaxy's ruling elite.
- Turning Point (2018): The title says it all, initiating the explosive climax of the first season.
- Message for the Dead (2018): The narrative threads tie together in preparation for the final confrontation.
- Retribution (2018): The epic conclusion to Season One's main storyline.
Season Two: The Post-War Galaxy
After the events of Retribution, the series jumps into Season Two (often referred to as the Takeover arc). These books deal with the power vacuums, new mercenary factions, and lingering threats in a fractured galaxy:
- Takeover (2020)
- Forget Nothing (2020)
- Legacies (2021)
- Dark Victory (2021)
- Convergence (2021)
- Remains (2022)
- Last Contact (2022)
- KTF Part 1 (2022)
- KTF Part 2 (2022)
- The Wanted (2024)
The Major Subseries and Spin-Offs
As the core series grew, the authors expanded the Galaxy’s Edge universe with several spin-off subseries. These can be integrated into your reading after you finish Season One, or read alongside it after you finish Kill Team (Book 3).
Savage Wars: The Ancient Prequels
Set roughly 100 years before the events of Legionnaire, the Savage Wars trilogy explores the brutal history of the initial conflicts between humanity and the post-human Savage threat. This trilogy won the Dragon Award for Best Military Science Fiction Novel in 2020. The books should be read in order:
- Savage Wars (2020)
- Gods and Legionnaires (2020)
- The Hundred (2020)
Tip: Even though this is chronologically first, do not start here. Read it after Retribution to fully appreciate the origin of the Legion's traditions and the mythos of Tyrus Rechs.
Tyrus Rechs: Contracts & Terminations
Centering on the galaxy's most dangerous and ancient bounty hunter, this subseries reads like a classic futuristic western. It can be read at almost any point after you are familiar with Rechs in the main series (typically after Book 2 or 3):
- Requiem for Medusa (2018)
- Chasing the Dragon (2018)
- Madame Guillotine (2019)
- Mephisto's Game (2023)
- Uncommon Valor (2023)
Dark Operator: Elite Covert Missions
Co-authored with former Special Forces officer Doc Spears, this subseries follows Kel Turner as he operates within the Legion's elite covert operations branch. It offers a highly detailed, realistic depiction of military tactics and black ops:
- Dark Operator (2020)
- Rebellion (2020)
- No Fail (2020)
- Exigency (2020)
- Angles of Attack (2021)
Order of the Centurion: Standalone Valor
This anthology-style subseries features collaborative works with different authors (including Jonathan Yanez and Josh Hayes). Each book focuses on a different act of heroic sacrifice or military excellence that earned a soldier the prestigious Order of the Centurion medal:
- Order of the Centurion (2018)
- Iron Wolves (2019)
- Stryker's War (2019)
- Through the Nether (2019)
- The Reservist (2019)
- Callsign: Valkyrie (2023)
- Always Legion (2023)
Publication Order vs. Chronological Order
For readers who have already finished the main series once and want to experience the timeline linearly, the chronological path offers a new perspective. However, it requires jumping between different subseries constantly. A strict chronological list begins with the prequel short stories and the Savage Wars trilogy, proceeds through Imperator, shifts into the early Contracts & Terminations books, and then enters the main series starting with Legionnaire. New readers should avoid this path as it spoils major identity reveals and historical mysteries established in the core novels.
What to Know Before You Start: The Canon Caveat
When searching for Galaxy's Edge reading orders online, you may come across a book titled The Best of Us, which was published in 2019 as the start of the Nomad subseries by Karen Traviss. While it was initially marketed as part of the official universe, the authors later removed the Nomad series from the official Galaxy's Edge canon. Due to creative differences and divergent character arcs, it is no longer considered part of the core continuity. Readers can safely skip it without missing any context for the main series or other spin-offs.
