How to Read the Immortal Guardians Universe
Dianne Duvall's bestselling paranormal romance universe is home to immortal warriors, psychotic vampires, powerful gifted humans, and even extraterrestrial allies. While each novel focuses on a standalone romance, the series features a complex, continuously evolving overarching plot. To fully appreciate the character development, shifting alliances, and world-building, it is highly recommended to read the series in publication order.
The Core Immortal Guardians Reading Order
The primary series follows the Immortal Guardians—gifted humans carrying a unique virus that grants them long life, rapid healing, and supernatural powers. They work in secret to protect humanity from vampires, who are gifted humans driven to psychotic madness by the same virus. This sequence includes full-length novels and essential novellas that advance the main plot:
- Darkness Dawns (2011): The series debut introduces Roland Warbrook, a centuries-old immortal, and Sarah Bingham, the music teacher who saves him from a vampire ambush.
- Night Reigns (2011): Focuses on Marcus Grayden, an immortal carrying deep scars, and Ami (Amiriska), a mysterious alien princess whose arrival expands the universe's mythology.
- Phantom Shadows (2012): Follows Sebastien Newcombe, a rogue immortal struggling to maintain his sanity, and Dr. Melanie Lipton, a human scientist whose research holds the key to the immortal virus.
- In Still Darkness (2014): A crucial novella (Book 3.5) featuring Richart d'Alençon, an immortal warrior who falls for Jenna McBride, a human woman who has stumbled into danger.
- Darkness Rises (2013): Focuses on the ancient and powerful Étienne d'Alençon and Krysta Linz, a fierce, independent human vampire hunter who doesn't need protecting.
- Night Unbound (2014): Follows Zach, an immortal warrior, and Lisette, a gifted human with unique abilities who has been rescued from captivity.
- Phantom Embrace (2016): Novella (Book 5.5) detailing the romance between Yuri, a centuries-old immortal, and Cat, a human survivor.
- Shadows Strike (2015): Follows Ethan, a guardian who can project his mind, and Heather, a gifted human healer whose path crosses his.
- Blade of Darkness (2017): Follows Aiden, a lonely warrior, and Dana, a strong-willed human who is dragged into the world of immortals.
- Awaken the Darkness (2018): Focuses on Stanislav, a warrior who lived in isolation for years, and Susan, a gifted human who can manipulate electricity.
- Death of Darkness (2019): The long-awaited story of Seth, the ancient, powerful leader of the Immortal Guardians, and his fated mate, Leah Somerson.

The Gifted Ones (Historical Spin-off)
This prequel spin-off series is set in medieval times and explains the origin of the 'gifted ones'—individuals with advanced DNA who possess special abilities. While they can be read at any time, they provide excellent historical context for the universe:
- A Sorceress of His Own (2015): Follows Lord Dillon and Alyssa, a gifted maiden who disguises herself as his squire.
- Rendezvous with Yesterday (2016): Details a time-travel romance between a modern man, Robert, and Bethany, a medieval woman with extraordinary gifts.
The Connection: Marcus, who appears as a teenage squire in The Gifted Ones, goes on to become the centuries-old immortal hero in the main series novel Night Reigns.
Aldebarian Alliance (Sci-Fi Spin-off)
The Aldebarian Alliance series shifts the setting from paranormal romance to sci-fi romance. It features alien warriors from the planet Aldebaria who arrive on Earth and form alliances (and romantic bonds) with humans and immortals alike. Because it acts as a chronological continuation of the universe, it is best read after finishing Death of Darkness (Book 9) of the main series:
- The Lasaran (2020): Follows Taelon, an Aldebarian warrior, and Lisa, a human captive.
- The Segonian (2021): Features Krystof, a Segonian warrior, and Eliana, who is Seth's sister.
- The Purveli (2021): Follows General Jaxen and Mara, a human altered by alien technology.
- The Akseli (2022): Focuses on Merrick, an Akseli warrior, and Aris, a human woman with unique psychic abilities.
- The Renegade Akseli Cyborg (2023): Follows Bastian, a cyborg warrior, and Sarah, a human who helps him escape.
Chronological and Order Caveats
While the books are theoretically standalones due to their self-contained romance arcs, the overarching battle against the vampire threat and the introduction of extraterrestrial alliances build consecutively. For the best experience, start with Darkness Dawns. Do not jump into the Aldebarian Alliance without reading at least the first nine books of Immortal Guardians, as characters like Seth play massive roles in both series, and major spoilers for the main series are present in the sci-fi spin-off.
