The Recommended Reading Order
For the best experience, readers should follow the series in its publication order, slotting in the prequel companion novel at a specific point to preserve character mysteries. Here is the recommended reading path:
- Free the Darkness (Book 1, 2015)
- Reign of Madness (Book 2, 2016)
- Legends of Ahn (Book 3, 2017)
- Kingdoms and Chaos (Book 4, 2018)
- Mage of No Renown (Tales of Terralor Book 1 / Prequel, 2022)
- Dragons and Demons (Book 5, 2022)
- Knight of Shadows (Book 6, 2024)
- Ritual of Ruin (Book 7, 2025)
Publication Order vs. Chronological Order
The chronological order of the series differs slightly from the publication order because of Mage of No Renown, which acts as a prequel focusing on the wizard companion Wesson. The chronological layout is as follows:
- Mage of No Renown (Prequel)
- Free the Darkness (Book 1)
- Reign of Madness (Book 2)
- Legends of Ahn (Book 3)
- Kingdoms and Chaos (Book 4)
- Dragons and Demons (Book 5)
- Knight of Shadows (Book 6)
- Ritual of Ruin (Book 7)
Why You Should Avoid Strict Chronological Order
Starting with the prequel, Mage of No Renown, is highly discouraged for new readers. Wesson is introduced in the main series as a gentle, mysterious mage with a carefully guarded background. The prequel explores his childhood and training, detailing the origins and capabilities of his magic. Reading it first spoils the gradual revelation of Wesson's powers and backstory in the main books. Author Kel Kade and fans alike recommend reading it after Book 4, Kingdoms and Chaos, which is the exact moment his character background becomes highly relevant to the escalating conflict.
Overview of the Books and Subseries
The Main Rezkin Arc (Books 1-7)
The core series centers on Rezkin, a young man raised in complete isolation inside a hidden fortress, trained by strict masters in every conceivable art of war, stealth, and courtly etiquette. He lives by a set of rigid Rules but knows nothing of the outside world, his parentage, or why he was trained. When his fortress is destroyed and his masters are killed, Rezkin enters the Kingdom of Ashai to search for his purpose. Over the course of seven books, Rezkin transitions from an emotionally detached, rule-following lethal weapon to a ruler fighting political, magical, and demonic threats.
Tales of Terralor Spin-Off
Mage of No Renown is designated as Book 1 of the Tales of Terralor subseries. This companion sequence is designed to explore secondary characters from the King's Dark Tidings world. Currently, Wesson's prequel is the only entry in this series, as Kade has focused her efforts on concluding Rezkin's main storyline.
What to Know Before You Start
Before diving into Rezkin’s journey, keep these key points in mind to enhance your reading experience:
- The Audiobooks are Stellar: The series gained a massive portion of its fanbase through its audiobooks, narrated by the award-winning Nick Podehl. His distinct voices and comedic timing bring Rezkin’s literal interpretation of social norms to life.
- The Tone Blend: The series is famous for combining brutal, high-stakes action with deadpan situational humor. Rezkin is incredibly overpowered in battle but completely clueless regarding friendship, romance, and casual conversation.
- Completed Story Arc: The primary arc focusing on Rezkin's search for identity and his conflict with the mad king wraps up with the release of the seventh book, Ritual of Ruin.
- Other Kel Kade Universes: Kel Kade has written another major fantasy series called Shroud of Prophecy (starting with Fate of the Fallen). This is set in an entirely different universe and shares no continuity or characters with King's Dark Tidings.
