The Recommended Reading Order for Nil
For the best reading experience, it is highly recommended to read Lynne Matson's series in its original publication order. While the companion novella Nil Remembered acts as a prequel chronologically, reading it first can spoil the mystery and discovery of the island's rules that are introduced in the first novel.
Recommended Path: Publication Order
- Nil (Book 1) – Published in 2014. Introduces Charley and Thad as they navigate the island's brutal 365-day timer and search for portals.
- Nil Unlocked (Book 2) – Published in 2015. Focuses on Rives and Skye as they try to break the island's system from the inside out.
- Nil on Fire (Book 3) – Published in 2016. Brings back familiar faces for the final high-stakes battle against the island itself.
- Nil Remembered (Book 0.5) – Published in 2016. A companion prequel novella told through the journal entries of Scott Bracken, who survived Nil and is coping with the aftermath back in the real world.
Publication Order vs. Chronological Order
If you prefer a strictly chronological approach, you can start with the prequel novella first:
- Nil Remembered (Book 0.5)
- Nil (Book 1)
- Nil Unlocked (Book 2)
- Nil on Fire (Book 3)
However, starting chronologically with Nil Remembered shifts the reader's perspective. It offers a detailed look at the island's mechanics through the eyes of Scott Bracken, a character who has already escaped. While this provides a unique perspective, the main trilogy is built around the slow-burn discovery of Nil's mysteries. For that reason, most fans recommend reading the prequel after completing the main trilogy, or at least after the first book, when the world-building is already firmly established.
What to Know Before You Start
Before stepping onto the shores of Nil, here is what you need to keep in mind:
- The Premise: Unsuspecting teenagers are snatched from the real world by glowing portals and deposited on an uncharted, sentient tropical island. They have exactly 365 days to catch a portal gate back home, or they die.
- The Tone: The series is often described as a YA mashup of the TV show Lost and the survival elements of Survivor, paired with a heavy dose of romance and emotional depth.
- The Island: The island is not just a setting; it acts as a sentient antagonist, changing and bringing in wild beasts, playing with the survivors, and presenting deadlier threats as time ticks down.
- The Format: The novels alternate perspectives using a dual-POV style, giving readers deep insight into the primary characters' survival tactics and emotional bonds. Nil Remembered is unique because it is written entirely in a journal format with drawings and sketches.
A Closer Look at the Books
Nil (Book 1)
The story begins when seventeen-year-old Charley wakes up naked on a strange tropical island. Snatched from a Target parking lot, she soon meets Thad, the leader of a small community of teenagers trapped on Nil. Charley learns the devastating rules of the island: they have one year to escape via random portal gates, or they die. As Charley and Thad fall in love, the ticking clock becomes an agonizing threat to their survival.
Nil Unlocked (Book 2)
The second installment shifts the spotlight to new protagonists, Rives and Skye. Following the dramatic events of the first book, the community on Nil is changing. Rives, now a key leader, is determined to help others escape. When Skye arrives, she brings new clues about how the portals work. Together, they begin to unravel the deeper secrets of the island and look for a way to break the system entirely.
Nil on Fire (Book 3)
The trilogy reaches its climax in the final book, where characters old and new must unite. The island itself is changing, becoming more active and dangerous. With time running out for the remaining survivors, they must launch a final, desperate attempt to escape before Nil locks them in forever. It is a high-stakes showdown that tests their bonds of love, loyalty, and sheer willpower.
Nil Remembered (Book 0.5)
Set twenty-eight days after his escape from Nil, this prequel novella focuses on Scott Bracken. Though he is physically safe back in the real world, the trauma of the island lingers. Scott struggles to adjust because nobody believes his story about the island, prompting him to keep a journal to process his memories. Through his drawings and entries, readers get a firsthand account of his dangerous survival journey prior to the events of the first book.
Practical Reader Advice
Can the books be read as standalones? No, the story of Nil is a continuous, escalating arc. Nil Unlocked and Nil on Fire rely heavily on the events, character relationships, and island rules established in the first book. Reading them out of order will result in major spoilers.
The companion novella, Nil Remembered, was released as a free digital-only story. It is a fantastic extra for fans who want to spend more time in the universe, but it is not strictly mandatory to understand the plot of the core trilogy. We recommend reading it as a satisfying epilogue to wrap up your journey.
