Dee Henderson’s O'Malley series is a landmark in Christian romantic suspense. 4. The Truth Seeker (2001 / Book 3): Lisa O’Malley is a forensic pathologist who trusts only physical evidence. Working with U.S. Marshal Quinn Diamond to solve a series of murders, she must search for the truth of both the crime and her own soul.

Publication Order vs. Chronological Order

Because the prequels were written at different times, readers often debate the best entry point for the series. Here is how the two approaches compare:

The Chronological Approach (Highly Recommended)

Starting with Danger in the Shadows is widely considered the best way to experience the O'Malleys. This prequel establishes the suspenseful tone, details the Chicago setting, and introduces Dave Richman. Reading this first makes Dave’s transition into The Negotiator seamless and gives readers a deeper appreciation of the emotional stakes. Alternatively, some readers place the 2010 novella Jennifer at the very beginning because it takes place before the events of The Negotiator. However, we recommend saving Jennifer until the end, as its emotional weight is much stronger once you already know and love the family.

The Publication Order Approach

If you prefer to read the books exactly as they were released, the order is slightly different. Dee Henderson released the books in the following sequence: The Negotiator (1999), Danger in the Shadows (1999), The Guardian (2001), The Truth Seeker (2001), The Protector (2001), The Healer (2002), The Rescuer (2003), and finally Jennifer (2010). If you start with The Negotiator, you will meet Dave Richman as an already established FBI agent, and then jump backward to read his sister Sara's story in Danger in the Shadows before returning to the main timeline with Marcus's book, The Guardian.
