The Recommended Reading Order: Internal Chronology

While author Lois McMaster Bujold writes these stories so they can be enjoyed as standalones, the vast majority of fans and the author herself recommend reading the series in its internal chronological order. Reading chronologically allows you to watch Penric grow from a naive nineteen-year-old who accidentally inherits a demon to a seasoned, wise Learned of the Temple, while enjoying the evolution of his partnership with Desdemona.

Here is the recommended internal chronological reading order of the series, including the latest releases:

1. Penric’s Demon (2015) — Penric is nineteen when a dying temple sorceress passes her chaos demon, Desdemona, to him, completely changing his life.
2. Penric and the Shaman (2016) — Set four years later. Penric, now a Temple sorcerer, is sent to assist a locator dog and a shaman hunter to track down a missing shaman accused of murder.
3. Penric’s Fox (2017) — Set a year after Penric and the Shaman. Penric solves the mystery of a murdered temple sorceress and her lost demon.
4. Testimony of Mute Things (2025) — Chronologically the fourth story, though published later. Penric travels to the border town of Occo to support the Princess-Archdivine during a temple conclave and is caught in a murder mystery.
5. Masquerade in Lodi (2020) — Set shortly after the events of Penric's Fox (and now after Testimony of Mute Things). Penric must handle a crisis involving a sacred elemental in the water-bound city of Lodi.
6. Penric’s Mission (2016) — Set when Penric is thirty. He is sent on a diplomatic mission to Cedonia, which immediately goes wrong when he is betrayed and imprisoned.
7. Mira’s Last Dance (2017) — Follows directly after Penric’s Mission. Penric and his allies attempt a daring escape across the Cedonian border using one of Desdemona's past hosts' personalities, Mira.
8. The Prisoner of Limnos (2017) — The conclusion of the Cedonian adventure arc, where Penric travels to the island of Limnos to rescue his future brother-in-law's family.
9. The Orphans of Raspay (2019) — Penric is shipwrecked and captured by pirates, ending up with the responsibility of safeguarding two young orphan girls.
10. The Physicians of Vilnoc (2020) — A deadly plague strikes the city of Vilnoc, and Penric must use his sorcery and medical knowledge to find a cure.
11. The Assassins of Thasalon (2021) — A short novel. Penric and his family reside in Thasalon, where he is drawn into a web of political assassins and divine interventions.
12. Knot of Shadows (2021) — Penric is called to investigate the mysterious death of a temple scholar, which may involve a malignant ghost.
13. Demon Daughter (2024) — Follows Penric's daughter and student sorceress, Otta, as Penric's past and family life take center stage.

Publication Order vs. Chronological Order

If you prefer to read the stories in the order they were released to the public, the main difference lies in three novellas that Bujold wrote as "prequels" to fill in the gaps of Penric's early life: Penric's Fox, Masquerade in Lodi, and Testimony of Mute Things. For instance, Bujold wrote Penric's Mission (which jumps ahead to Penric at age 30) before going back to write about his mid-twenties in Penric's Fox and Masquerade in Lodi.

Connection to the World of the Five Gods

The Penric and Desdemona stories are set in Bujold's broader fantasy universe, the World of the Five Gods (also known as the Chalion series). The timeline of Penric's adventures is set roughly 150 years before the events of her Hugo-nominated novel The Curse of Chalion.

You do not need to read the novel-length Chalion books (The Curse of Chalion, Paladin of Souls, and The Hallowed Hunt) to understand or enjoy Penric’s stories. The novellas stand perfectly on their own. However, reading the novels first will give you a deeper, richer understanding of the world's unique theology, the nature of the Bastard (the god of disaster and demons), and how the temple system works.

The Novella Format: Most of these entries are novellas, ranging from 20,000 to 45,000 words. They are fast, character-driven reads that focus more on mystery, dialogue, theology, and interpersonal relationships than grand, world-ending wars.

Demon Mechanics: In Bujold's world, demons are not evil creatures from hell. They are chaos elementals that cross over into the physical world and attach to a living host. Desdemona is unique because she has survived through twelve previous female hosts (ranging from a courtesan to a physician to a lioness), inheriting their memories and skills, which she shares with Penric.

The Audiobooks: If you enjoy audiobooks, the Penric series is highly celebrated for its narration. Voice actor Grover Gardner narrates the entire series, bringing Penric’s warmth and Desdemona’s dry, multi-voiced sarcasm to life perfectly.
