The Recommended Reading Order
When diving into The Phantom Queen Diaries, you have two primary options. You can take the Straight Route, focusing exclusively on Quinn MacKenna's standalone progression through her own series, or the Templeverse Chronological Route, which weaves her adventures in with the broader universe's timeline. Whichever path you choose, here is the publication order of the core books you need to follow:
- Whiskey Ginger (2018)
- Cosmopolitan (2018)
- Old Fashioned (2018)
- Dark and Stormy (2018)
- Moscow Mule (2018)
- Witches Brew (2018)
- Salty Dog (2019)
- Sea Breeze (2019)
- Hurricane (2020)
- Brimstone Kiss (2020)
- Moonshine (2020)
- Yuletide Punch (2021)
- Snakebite (2022)
- Boilermaker (2023)
The Templeverse Chronological Connection
Because the series is set in Shayne Silvers' shared Templeverse (also featuring the Nate Temple and Feathers and Fire series), characters frequently cross paths. Reading the books chronologically across the entire universe offers the richest experience. If you decide to read the full Templeverse, here is where Quinn's books slot in:
- Read Whiskey Ginger after the Nate Temple anthology story Collins and before the ninth Nate Temple novel, Nine Souls.
- Read Cosmopolitan after Nine Souls and before the Feathers and Fire novel Angels Roar.
- Read Old Fashioned and Dark and Stormy back-to-back before tackling the tenth Nate Temple novel, Horseman.
- Read Moscow Mule after Horseman and before the Feathers and Fire novel Sinner.
- Read Witches Brew after Sinner and before the eleventh Nate Temple novel, Legend.
- Read Salty Dog after Legend and before the Feathers and Fire novel Black Sheep.
- Read Sea Breeze after the thirteenth Nate Temple novel, Ascension, and before the fourteenth, Hurricane.
- Read Brimstone Kiss after Hurricane and before the Feathers and Fire novel Anghellic.
- Read Moonshine after the fifteenth Nate Temple novel, Carnage, and before the Feathers and Fire novel Trinity.
- Read Snakebite and Boilermaker back-to-back after the seventeenth Nate Temple novel, Dark Horse (and its holiday novella Yuletide Punch), and before the eighteenth Nate Temple novel, Reverie.
What to Know Before You Start
Co-authored by Shayne Silvers and Cameron O'Connell, The Phantom Queen Diaries shifts the Templeverse lens to Boston's supernatural underbelly. The protagonist, Quinn MacKenna, is a magic-nullifying black-market arms dealer who trades in favors rather than cash. Her mother was a former IRA member, and Quinn's primary driving force is uncovering her father's identity and finding a doorway to the Fae realm.
Because Quinn can completely nullify magic, she is a wildcard in a world populated by vampires, wizards, and gods. When she accidentally crosses paths with wizard Nate Temple after stealing a magical artifact, she is pulled out of her street-level dealings into cosmic conflicts that shape the fate of the entire Templeverse.
Practical Reader Advice
If you are new to the Templeverse, you do not technically need to read the other series to enjoy Quinn's story. The authors do a fantastic job of keeping the narrative accessible, explaining major events and returning characters so you will not feel lost. However, reading her books entirely standalone means you will miss the emotional weight and context of major crossovers, particularly when characters like Nate Temple or Callie Penrose show up. For the absolute best experience, starting from the beginning of the Templeverse with Obsidian Son (Nate Temple Book 1) is highly recommended.
