The Recommended Reading Order
The Sirantha Jax series is a highly linear, character-driven space opera. Because the books follow a single continuous narrative arc, reading them out of order is not recommended. You should follow the series in its original publication sequence to watch Sirantha Jax evolve from an imprisoned survivor into the key to a galactic rebellion.
- Grimspace (2008) – The story kicks off here. Sirantha Jax is in a high-security facility after a horrific ship crash that killed her lover. When a group of rogue fighters breaks her out, she is forced to run, navigating not only the dangers of deep space but also the political corruption of the Farwan Corporation.
- Wanderlust (2008) – Following the chaotic events of the first book, Jax takes on a dangerous diplomatic mission to the insectoid Ithtorian homeworld of Ithiss-Tor. She must navigate complex syndicate criminal webs and deal with the physical toll that jumping through grimspace takes on her body.
- Doubleblind (2009) – Jax finds herself caught in the complex and ruthless political arena of the Ithtorians. Her relationship with pilot March is pushed to its absolute limits as they fight to stay alive amid mounting interstellar tensions.
- Killbox (2010) – The stakes escalate to an all-out war. The Conglomerate is threatened by a terrifying alien threat, and Jax must unite disparate factions, putting her unique navigation abilities to the ultimate test.
- Aftermath (2011) – Dealing with the devastating consequences of the war, Jax and her crew must pick up the pieces, facing new threats arising from the vacuum of power and rebuilding what they lost.
- Endgame (2012) – The final chapter of Jax's six-book saga. Jax leads a desperate rebellion to secure freedom for the enslaved La'hengrin, bringing her personal journey of survival and sacrifice to a definitive conclusion.
The Dred Chronicles: Same Universe, New Journey
Once you finish the main six-book series, you can venture back into the same universe with the spin-off trilogy, The Dred Chronicles. Set several decades after the events of Endgame, this subseries takes place on a decaying, lawless prison ship named Perdition. While it features the same sci-fi background and references to the universe's mechanics, it follows a brand-new cast of characters led by Dresdemona "Dred" Devos, the "Dread Queen" of one of the ship's internal gang territories.

Publication Order vs. Chronological Order
In the Sirantha Jax universe, publication order and chronological order align perfectly. There are no prequel novellas or scattered short stories to worry about. The six main novels flow directly into one another chronologically. Similarly, The Dred Chronicles takes place decades later, so reading the spin-off after the main series is the most logical path. If you want the complete picture of this universe's timeline, simply read the books in the order they were published from 2008 to 2015.
What to Know Before You Start
Before jumping into Grimspace, there are a few stylistic and thematic elements to keep in mind:
- First-Person, Present-Tense Narration: Ann Aguirre writes the Jax books entirely from Sirantha's raw, immediate point of view. This gives the narration a sense of urgency, pulling you directly into her head as she struggles with trauma, addiction, and difficult decisions.
- The Cost of the Gift: Grimspace navigation is not easy. Sirantha's ability to navigate the dangerous dimension of grimspace requires a rare genetic trait, and each "jump" damages her mind and body. This theme of physical and mental toll acts as a powerful narrative thread throughout the series.
- Romance and Gritty Sci-Fi: The series successfully blends romance with space opera and dark, gritty action. While the emotional relationships (particularly with March and her close bond with the Ithtorian mercenary Vel) are central to the story, the universe itself is dangerous, featuring elements of body horror, corporate conspiracies, and survival.
Can You Read the Books as Standalones?
No, the Sirantha Jax books cannot be read as standalones. Each novel picks up almost immediately where the previous one ended, and the character relationships, political alliances, and main conflict build over the course of the six books. Skipping any book will leave you confused. The Dred Chronicles, however, functions as its own self-contained story arc. While reading the Sirantha Jax series first provides excellent world-building context, you can technically read the spin-off trilogy without having read the original series.
