The Recommended Reading Order
The Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley is a continuous, chronological mystery saga that follows the adventures of orphaned sisters Sabrina and Daphne Grimm. Because the books follow a linear narrative arc where each mystery builds directly upon the discoveries, relationships, and battles of the previous one, you should read them in order of publication. Skipping around will spoil major plot twists, including the mystery of the girls' missing parents and the identity of the Master. Below is the recommended reading path for the series.
1. The Fairy-Tale Detectives (2005)
In the book that started it all, eleven-year-old Sabrina and seven-year-old Daphne Grimm are sent to live with their grandmother, Relda Grimm, in the strange town of Ferryport Landing. The sisters learn they are descendants of the famous Brothers Grimm, whose fairy tales were actually historical case files. When a rampaging giant kidnaps their grandmother, the newly minted detectives must solve the crime with the help of a reformed Prince Charming and Puck, the mischievous Robin Goodfellow.
2. The Unusual Suspects (2005)
Sabrina and Daphne try to live a normal life by going to school, but normalcy is hard to find when your teacher is Snow White. When a teacher is found dead, suspended in a giant spiderweb, the girls suspect an Everafter is responsible. Sabrina must learn to overcome her deep distrust of fairy-tale creatures to find the killer before the school becomes a playground of magical terror.
3. The Problem Child (2006)
The search for the girls' parents takes a dark turn. Sabrina and Daphne discover that their mother and father are asleep under a magical curse, held hostage by the Scarlet Hand—a rogue faction of Everafters seeking to break the barrier around Ferryport Landing. The girls face their most dangerous adversary yet: the infamous Little Red Riding Hood, who has been twisted into a formidable enemy.
4. Once Upon a Crime (2007)
To find a cure for their poisoned grandmother, the Grimm family must leave Ferryport Landing and travel to New York City. There, they discover a thriving hidden community of Everafters living in the metropolis. When the legendary King Oberon is murdered, the girls find themselves in the middle of a power struggle for the fairy realm, forced to investigate the crime while navigating the dangerous streets of Manhattan.
5. Magic and Other Misdemeanors (2007)
Back in Ferryport Landing, a rash of magical thefts strikes the town. Famous fairy-tale artifacts, including Cinderella's slipper and Aladdin's lamp, are disappearing. As the Mayor tries to keep order, Sabrina and Daphne must work with the Sheriff to track down the thief, only to find that the culprit is manipulating time itself, threatening to unravel the past, present, and future of the Grimm lineage.
6. Tales from the Hood (2008)
The Scarlet Hand's rebellion reaches a boiling point, and the town is on the brink of war. The Grimm family is put on trial by a corrupt jury of Everafters who want to strip them of their detective duties. To save their family name and maintain the peace, Sabrina and Daphne must defend themselves in court while uncovering a massive conspiracy hidden in the depths of Ferryport Landing.
7. The Everafter War (2009)
The barrier holding the Everafters inside Ferryport Landing is failing, and full-scale war breaks out. Relda Grimm gathers her allies, including classic heroes and reformed villains, to fight the Scarlet Hand. Sabrina must make a difficult choice that could alter the fate of both humans and Everafters forever, while the mystery of her parents' capture finally reaches its climax.
8. The Inside Story (2010)
Sabrina, Daphne, and Puck chase the escaping villain into the Book of Everafter—a magical tome that holds every story ever written. Trapped inside the pages, the girls must navigate classic tales like Robin Hood and Peter Pan, fighting to stay on script to avoid being trapped forever by the story's Editor while hunting their parents' captors.
9. The Council of Mirrors (2012)
The epic finale of the Sisters Grimm saga. With the barrier destroyed and the world of humans and Everafters colliding, the Grimms must face the Master in a final showdown. Surrounded by enemies and facing betrayal, Sabrina and Daphne must unite the magical council and use the magic of the Council of Mirrors to save their family and restore balance to the world.
The Companion Guide
In addition to the nine main novels, Michael Buckley wrote an official companion encyclopedia to the series. Read this book after completing the main series (or at least after Book 8) to avoid spoilers about the characters and plot points.
- A Very Grimm Guide (Published in early 2012, sometimes listed as The Sisters Grimm Ultimate Guide): This illustrated companion serves as the definitive reference manual for the series. It features detailed character bios, maps of Ferryport Landing, case files, journal entries, a complete timeline of the Grimm family, and hilarious, sarcastic commentary written from the perspective of Puck.
The 10th Anniversary Revisions
If you are buying physical copies of the books, you may notice different editions. Starting in 2015, Amulet Books released the 10th Anniversary Editions of the series. For these editions, author Michael Buckley did not add new chapters, but he did perform extensive, line-by-line revisions to the original text to polish the storytelling. These editions also featured updated cover art by the series' original illustrator, Peter Ferguson. Either the original or the revised editions will give you the complete story, but the 10th-anniversary editions represent the author's final polished vision.
The Apple TV+ Animated Adaptation
For readers who want to see Sabrina and Daphne's adventures come to life, an animated television series based on the books premiered on Apple TV+ on October 3, 2025. Developed by showrunners Amy Higgins and Erica Rothschild, and animated by Titmouse, the show's first season adapts the events of the first book, The Fairy-Tale Detectives. The series features Ariel Winter as the voice of Sabrina Grimm, Leah Newman as Daphne Grimm, and Laraine Newman as Grandmother Relda, with Michael Buckley serving as an executive producer. Production on a second season, set to adapt the events of The Unusual Suspects, is currently underway.
What to Know Before You Start
Before you dive in, it helps to understand the unique lore of Ferryport Landing. The town is a magical reservation protected by a barrier created by Wilhelm Grimm. Under the terms of the barrier, Everafters (magical characters from folklore, fairy tales, and classic literature) are immortal and cannot leave the town limits, while humans can move freely. The Grimm family acts as "detectives"—essentially peacekeepers and investigators—to ensure the magical residents do not harm the normal human population. The series beautifully balances lighthearted fairy-tale humor with darker, high-stakes themes of grief, family separation, and systemic prejudice between species, making it a rich read for both middle-grade readers and adults.
