Breaking Down the Books in the Skin Universe
Skin Game (Book 1)
The series kicks off with Kyra Beckwith, a skilled con artist with a unique, draining gift: when she makes physical contact with someone, she can temporarily absorb their greatest skills — whether that is martial arts prowess, lockpicking, or athletic agility. After conning the ruthless Las Vegas mob boss Gerard Serrano to avenge her father's death, Kyra finds herself running for her life. Serrano hires Reyes, an exceptionally lethal hitman with a strict personal code of honor, to track her down and recover the stolen millions. When Reyes corners Kyra, the explosive chemistry between the two forces him to choose between fulfilling his contract or protecting the woman he has grown to love.
Skin Tight (Book 2)
In the second novel, the focus shifts to Mia Sauter, a brilliant forensic accountant who specializes in uncovering hidden financial secrets in the flashy casinos of Las Vegas. Mia's life collides with Addison Foster (who is secretly Søren Frost), a deeply scarred and mysterious man running from a dark past. Addison is an escapee from a sinister, covert laboratory known only as "the Foundation," where he was subjected to horrific medical experiments. As they confront Addison's past and evade the agents sent to recapture him, Mia must use her analytical mind and emotional strength to help Addison reclaim his humanity.
Skin & Bone (Novella)
Originally published in the February 2011 paranormal romance anthology Primal (alongside stories by Lora Leigh, Michelle Rowen, and Jory Strong), this novella tells the story of Silas. Silas is a test subject who survived five years of torture and experimentation inside the Foundation. Following his escape, Silas tries to hide his lethal supernatural abilities while living on the run. While hiding out in Ecuador, an earthquake strikes, and Silas saves a free-spirited volunteer worker named Juneau. Silas finds solace in Juneau, who does not fear his powers, sparking a deep and healing connection as they flee his pursuers.
Skin Heat (Book 3)
The third novel centers on Zeke Noble, another survivor of the Foundation's brutal experiments. The procedures left Zeke with heightened, animalistic senses and volatile primal instincts that threaten to consume him. While trying to live a quiet life, Zeke crosses paths with Geneva "Neva" Harper, a passionate veterinarian and the black sheep of a wealthy Southern family. When a serial killer begins targeting people in their community, Zeke is driven by his protective instincts to guard Neva, forcing him to fight to maintain his humanity while embracing his dark gifts to keep her safe.
Skin Dive (Book 4)
The series reaches its dramatic climax in Skin Dive, focusing on Gillie and Taye. Gillie is a former captive of the Foundation who possesses an extraordinary, high-level healing ability, while Taye is a man who can manipulate and wield electricity. Taye's abilities, however, come at a heavy cost, causing progressive memory loss and a terminal physical condition. Escaping the laboratory together, they go on the run to protect their freedom. They team up with a survivor known as "Mockingbird," who leads an underground resistance movement dedicated to dismantling the Foundation once and for all.
What to Know Before You Start
The Concept of the Foundation
The driving antagonist throughout the entire Skin series is "the Foundation." This clandestine, highly illegal organization abducts individuals, including children, who display latent supernatural abilities, and subjects them to torturous genetic engineering. The Foundation's goal is to turn these individuals into expendable, highly efficient black-market weapons or corporate assets. While the first book, Skin Game, reads primarily like a gritty mob suspense novel, the later books progressively peel back the layers of the Foundation's conspiracy, moving the series from a pure romantic thriller into a deep, sci-fi-tinged urban fantasy rebellion.
The Ava Gray Pseudonym
Ann Aguirre chose to write this series under the pen name Ava Gray to signal a distinct change in tone from her other work. The Skin books are significantly darker, grittier, and contain a higher level of sensual romance ("steam") than her science fiction and urban fantasy series published under her real name. The series is celebrated by fans for its focus on deeply flawed, morally gray antiheroes and strong-willed heroines who are survivors of trauma rather than typical damsels in distress.
Can the Books Be Read as Standalones?
Each book features a self-contained romance arc that resolves with a Happy Ever After (HEA) for the main couple. However, the overarching plot regarding the escape from the Foundation and the eventual fight to destroy the organization builds sequentially. Reading the books out of order will spoil major plot points and characters' survival details. For the best experience, start with Skin Game and follow the series chronologically.
