Skip Langdon Series Breakdown
Skip Langdon is a six-foot-tall, strong-willed officer who rejects her upper-class debutante roots to join the New Orleans Police Department. Her insider knowledge of the city's elite, combined with her street-smart policing, makes her uniquely suited to solve high-stakes crimes. The series won critical acclaim early on, with the debut novel New Orleans Mourning winning the prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Novel in 1991.
Several of the Skip Langdon novels have been re-released under alternate titles. If you are tracking down copies, note that New Orleans Beat is sometimes sold as Death Before Facebook, Crescent City Connection is also known as Crescent City Kill, and Mean Woman Blues was published in some markets as Boneyard Blues.
Talba Wallis Series Breakdown
Talba Wallis, who also goes by her poetic pseudonym "Baroness Pontalba," is a young, brilliant Black poet, computer hacker, and private investigator. Unlike Skip, who operates within the NOPD hierarchy, Talba works in the private sector, often teaming up with her older, grumpier mentor, Eddie Valentino. The dynamic between the high-tech, poetic Talba and the old-school Eddie provides a wonderful contrast to Skip's solo police work. Her spin-off series spans four novels and a standalone short story, Kid Trombone, which was released in 2014.
What to Know Before You Start
Julie Smith's writing is heavily grounded in her real-world background as a journalist for the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Because of this, the books offer an incredibly authentic look at New Orleans, capturing its distinct neighborhoods, racial and socioeconomic divides, culinary traditions, and local music scene. While the mysteries are tightly plotted, it is the rich atmosphere of the Crescent City that truly brings the pages to life.
Most of the books can function as standalones, but the personal lives, romantic interests, and career arcs of Skip and Talba develop continuously. Reading them out of order will spoil these long-term storylines, particularly the mysteries surrounding Talba's family history which are established in 82 Desire and resolved during the course of her own spin-off series.
