What to Know Before Starting the Slow Burn Series
Maya Banks' Slow Burn series is a unique fusion of contemporary romantic suspense and light paranormal elements. Set in and around Houston, Texas, the series centers on Devereaux Security Services (DSS), a elite security firm owned and operated by the wealthy, protective Devereaux family. Each book features a different couple, pairing an alpha hero—either a Devereaux brother or a top-tier security operator—with a heroine possessing unique, often burdening, psychic abilities such as telepathy, telekinesis, or supernatural healing.
While each book focus on a self-contained romance and resolves its primary threat, they are highly interconnected. The overarching relationships, family dynamics, and references to previous rescues build upon one another. To get the best reading experience and avoid spoilers, you should read this series in its strict publication order.
Slow Burn Books in Recommended Reading Order
Because the chronological events mirror the order in which the books were released, the publication order is the only recommended path for readers.
1. Keep Me Safe (2014)
The series begins with Keep Me Safe, introducing us to Caleb Devereaux and Ramie St. Claire. When Caleb's younger sister Tori is abducted, he desperately seeks out Ramie, a woman with a psychic gift that allows her to feel a victim's pain and locate them. However, Ramie's ability takes a devastating physical and emotional toll on her, forcing her into isolation. Although she saves Tori, Ramie inadvertently connects with the killer, putting herself in grave danger. Realizing the risk she took, Caleb vows to protect her, sparking a passionate and protective bond as they hunt down the threat.
2. In His Keeping (2015)
The second book shifts focus to Beau Devereaux, Caleb's brother and the head of Devereaux Security, and Arial "Ari" Rochester. Ari has spent her entire life hiding her dangerous gift of telekinesis. When a brutal attack exposes her powers and leaves her parents missing, she is forced to reach out to the Devereaux family for protection. Beau takes on the job personally, quickly finding himself drawn to the vulnerable yet powerful Ari. As they work to find her parents, Beau must shield Ari from those who want to exploit her unique abilities.
3. Safe at Last (2015)
The third installment, Safe at Last, is a second-chance romance starring Zack Covington, a key member of the Devereaux Security team, and his high school sweetheart Anna-Grace "Gracie" Hill. Gracie possesses psychic abilities that she has tried to suppress, especially after a tragic event twelve years ago tore them apart. When Zack discovers a clue that proves Gracie is still alive, he tracks her down, only to find her heavily traumatized and her psychic gifts seemingly gone. The pair must rebuild their trust while facing external threats determined to use Gracie to get to Zack.
4. With Every Breath (2016)
With Every Breath follows Eliza Cummings, a resilient employee of Devereaux Security, and Wade Sterling, a wealthy and powerful alpha who operates outside normal rules. Eliza has been hiding a dark past involving an abuser who has recently been released from prison. Unwilling to drag her DSS family into danger, she runs away to face the threat alone. Wade, who has long been fascinated by Eliza, tracks her down to keep her safe, forcing her to accept his help and his heart in the process.
5. Just One Touch (2017)
The fifth book, Just One Touch, centers on Jenna, a woman who escaped a strict religious cult where she was held captive since childhood. Jenna has the incredible power to heal others with a touch. While fleeing her captors, she crosses paths with Isaac Washington, a dedicated DSS recruit. When Isaac is shot during her escape, Jenna saves his life by healing his mortal wound. Bound by gratitude and an instant connection, Isaac commits to protecting Jenna from the cult members hunting her down.
The Canceled Sixth Book: His Only Weakness
Many readers look for a sixth book in the series, originally announced as His Only Weakness. This novel was intended to tell the story of Tori Devereaux—Caleb's sister who was rescued in the first book—as she learned to cope with the trauma of her abduction and her own psychic gift of foresight. However, this book was ultimately canceled and has not been released, leaving the series concluded at five books.
Practical Reader Advice
- Can they be read as standalones? Technically yes, but it is highly discouraged. The characters from previous books frequently appear as supporting cast members, and the aftermath of prior events (especially Tori's kidnapping in Book 1) heavily influences the family dynamics in later novels.
- Crossover Connections: Although Maya Banks has written other popular security-team series like the KGI (Kelly Group International) series, they are not set in the same universe. There are no official crossovers between Slow Burn and KGI.
- Content Warning: The series contains darker themes, including abduction, past physical abuse, and trauma. If you prefer lighthearted romance, the intense suspense and angst in these books might be a departure from your typical read.
