Fever of the Bone (2009)
This novel addresses the dangers of the digital age. Tony and Carol hunt a predator who uses social media websites to target and lure vulnerable teenagers. The Retribution (2011)
One of the most intense and pivotal entries in the series. Cross and Burn (2013)

Splinter the Silence (2015)

Insidious Intent (2017)
A serial killer known as the "Wedding Killer" targets single women at wedding receptions, burning their bodies in stolen cars. As Tony and Carol close in on the perpetrator, the investigation demands a devastating ethical compromise, leading to a shocking and tragic climax that alters their relationship forever.
How the Dead Speak (2019)
The eleventh and final novel deals with the massive fallout of the previous book's climax. With Tony imprisoned and Carol attempting to rebuild her life outside the force, a chilling discovery is made: the skeletal remains of multiple children are unearthed at a former home for unwed mothers. Despite their separation, their fates remain tied to the dark history of Bradfield.
The Crossover Short Story
In addition to the eleven core novels, Val McDermid collaborated with Peter James for a special crossover short story titled "Footloose". Published in the 2017 anthology MatchUp (edited by Lee Child), this story features Tony Hill and Carol Jordan teaming up with James’s famous protagonist, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace. While not essential to the main storyline, it is a delightful addition for completionists and is best read between Insidious Intent and How the Dead Speak.
