The Recommended Reading Order
The Warrior Chronicles is a completed six-book epic fantasy series with a prequel novella and a bonus epilogue. Because the main narrative follows a tight, continuous chronological arc, reading them out of order will ruin the massive plot twists and character development. - Chosen (Book 1): This is the ideal entry point to the series. You meet Shanti as a fugitive found near death in the wastelands, and watch her team up with Captain Cayan.
- Forged in Blood (Book 0.5 / Prequel): A short story detailing Shanti’s early struggles with her sword skills and her "Gift" alongside her companion Rohan. While chronologically first, it is best read after Book 1 to preserve the mystery of Shanti's powers.
- Hunted (Book 2): Shanti’s quest to rescue her brother Rohan intensifies, introducing dangerous new lands and escalating the conflict.
- Shadow Lands (Book 3): Shanti faces brutal trials to claim her title and unite the Shadow People.
- Invasion (Book 4): With her title secured, Shanti and Cayan begin planning their rebellion against the tyrant Xandre, starting with the Westwood Lands.
- Siege (Book 5): The resistance gathers its forces as Xandre prepares to crush them, setting the stage for an all-out war.
- Overtaken (Book 6): The epic conclusion to Shanti’s war against the dictator Xandre.

Publication vs. Chronological Order: Where to Start?
While the official reading order lists Forged in Blood as Book 0.5, most fans recommend starting with Chosen. Here is why:
First, Chosen was designed to introduce readers to the world. When Shanti is first found by Commander Sanders and Captain Cayan, she is a complete mystery. The reader discovers the extent of her rare, mind-based "Gift" and her tragic past at the same time the other characters do. If you read the prequel first, you immediately learn about her background, her brother Rohan, and her abilities, which strips away much of the tension and intrigue of the first book.
Second, Forged in Blood was published after the early books as a companion story (and originally featured in the Legends: Fifteen Tales of Sword & Sorcery anthology). Reading it as a flashback between Book 1 and Book 2—or even after finishing the main series—provides excellent context without spoiling the initial build-up.

Chosen
The series begins with Shanti, a battered fugitive, being rescued by a scouting party led by Commander Sanders. The trials test both her physical endurance and her mental gifts to their absolute limits.
Invasion
Shanti has claimed her title, but the real work is just beginning. In this volume, the focus shifts to strategic rebellion. Shanti and Cayan travel to the Westwood Lands, a region trapped behind massive defensive walls, trying to recruit allies before Xandre’s forces overrun them. The narrative shifts into a high-stakes military fantasy.
Siege
An uneasy silence falls over the land as both sides prepare for the final clash. Shanti takes charge of the political and strategic alliances, while Cayan organizes their ragtag army, which now includes trained soldiers, raw recruits, and Shanti’s own clans. The tension builds as they face the reality of going up against Xandre’s seemingly invincible forces.
Overtaken
The final book delivers the action-packed climax of the rebellion. Shanti, Cayan, and their united army launch their final campaign to overthrow Xandre. It is a fast-paced, high-stakes battle that resolves the primary conflict of the series and concludes Shanti’s journey from a hunted refugee to a legendary leader.
Overtaken: Bonus Epilogue
After the intense, war-torn ending of the main series, K.F. Breene released a short epilogue to satisfy fans who wanted to see Shanti and Cayan's life in peacetime. It answers burning questions about their future, their relationship, and whether they finally get to settle down and build a family. What to Know Before You Start
Before you dive in, here are a few things to keep in mind about the series style and structure:
- It is a completed story: Unlike many fantasy series that drag on indefinitely, Shanti's story has a definitive beginning, middle, and end. You can binge the entire series without worrying about cliffhangers that will never be resolved.
- Slow-Burn Romance: The relationship between Shanti and Cayan is a true slow-burn. It develops naturally over several books through shared hardships, mutual respect, and witty banter, rather than immediate attraction.
- Low Spice, High Action: If you are looking for highly explicit romance, this is not it. The series leans heavily into the epic fantasy, combat, and world-building elements, with the romance serving as a secondary plotline.
- Unique Magic System: The "Gift" in this world is primarily mind-based, allowing characters to influence thoughts, project mental barriers, and sense others. This contrasts nicely with the gritty, physical swordplay that dominates the battle scenes.
- Standalone Universe: The Warrior Chronicles is set in its own separate world. While K.F. Breene is famous for her urban fantasy universes like the Demigods of San Francisco, this series has no crossover elements and can be enjoyed completely on its own.
