The safest and most satisfying way to experience the Amish Country Crossroads series is in order of publication. Because the first two novels form a continuous story arc, reading them in order is essential for following the characters' development.
- The Postcard (1999) – The series opens with Rachel Yoder, a young blind Amish widow who runs a bed-and-breakfast, and Philip Bradley, a visiting executive who discovers a decades-old postcard containing a family secret.
- The Crossroad (1999) – This direct sequel continues Rachel and Philip's romance as they navigate faith, cultural differences, and the personal struggles that threaten to pull them apart.
- Sanctuary (2001) – Co-authored with David Lewis, this book shifts the focus to a new protagonist, Melissa James, a woman who flees her past to seek refuge in the Lancaster County Amish community.
The Core Duology vs. The Suspense Coda
While commonly packaged as a trilogy, the series is functionally split into two parts:
- The Rachel and Philip Story: The Postcard and The Crossroad focus closely on the romance, faith challenges, and cultural divides between an Amish woman and an English journalist.
- A Standalone Suspense Shift: Sanctuary is a collaborative work between Beverly Lewis and her husband, David. It introduces a completely new set of main characters and leans heavier into Christian mystery and suspense. While it takes place in the same community, it works well as a standalone story.
Where to Start
You should start with The Postcard. Because The Crossroad relies heavily on the emotional setup and plot details established in the first book, jumping straight into the sequel will leave you missing crucial context. However, if you are only interested in romantic suspense rather than a traditional Amish romance, you can read Sanctuary on its own without reading the first two books.
