Recommended Reading Path
Since the Biggie Weatherford series follows the personal growth and aging of Biggie's grandson J.R. (who serves as the series narrator), it is highly recommended to read the novels in their original publication order. The timeline progresses naturally from one book to the next, starting with J.R. as a twelve-year-old and showing the evolution of the quirky characters in Job's Crossing, Texas.
- Biggie and the Poisoned Politician (1996)
- Biggie and the Mangled Mortician (1997)
- Biggie and the Fricasseed Fat Man (1998)
- Biggie and the Meddlesome Mailman (1999)
- Biggie and the Quincy Ghost (2001)
- Biggie and the Devil Diet (2002)
Publication Order vs. Chronological Order
There are no prequels or time-traveling shifts in this series. The chronological events of the narrative mirror the order of publication. Skipping around is possible since each mystery is self-contained, but reading them in order preserves the charm of watching J.R. grow up and seeing the recurring town residents change over time.
The Judge Jackson Crain Connection
After finishing the Biggie Weatherford series, fans of Nancy Bell's East Texas cozy style can transition to her next series, which features Judge Jackson Crain. Set in the town of Post Oak, Texas, this three-book series begins with Restored to Death (2003). While the stories share a similar Southern atmosphere, they do not feature crossovers with Biggie Weatherford or J.R.
