The Recommended Reading Order
Carla Neggers’ Boston Police/FBI series—also widely known as the Ireland Series—consists of four main novels. The narrative flows in chronological order, matching the order of publication. While each book focuses on a different couple and resolves its own central mystery, characters from previous novels make guest appearances, and recurring threads tie the series together. To get the best experience, we recommend reading them in order:

The Books in Detail
1. The Widow (2006)
The series opens with Boston homicide detective Abigail Browning. Seven years after her FBI agent husband was shot and killed on their honeymoon on Mount Desert Island in Maine, Abigail receives an anonymous tip suggesting the murder was not a random crime. Returning to the island to investigate, she teams up with Owen Garrison, a search-and-rescue worker haunted by the original search, to uncover a web of dark secrets.
2. The Angel (2008)
Folklorist and illustrator Keira Sullivan travels to the Irish coast to research a local legend about a Celtic stone angel, while also searching for secrets in her own family history. When she becomes trapped in a collapsed stone ruin, undercover FBI agent and search-and-rescue volunteer Simon Cahill rescues her. Together, they are pulled into a dangerous cold case investigation that spans thirty years, taking them from Ireland back to Boston.
3. The Mist (2009)
Lizzie Rush, who comes from an elite family of hoteliers and has a father with a history in espionage, is determined to take down Norman Estabrook, a corrupt billionaire running an international criminal network. When Lizzie’s life is threatened, she goes undercover in Ireland and must align with Will Davenport, a mysterious British intelligence officer, to stop a deadly wave of violence. FBI Agent Simon Cahill from the previous book also makes an appearance.
4. The Whisper (2010)
Archaeologist Sophie Malone is haunted by a traumatic night on a remote Irish island where she was attacked and left for dead in a cave. When she suspects the stolen Celtic artifacts and the events of that night are connected to recent violence in Boston, she teams up with Boston detective Cyrus "Scoop" Wisdom, who is recovering from an explosion. Together, they chase a killer through ancient folklore and modern danger.
Publication Order vs. Chronological Order
Because the publication dates match the timeline of the universe, there are no chronological timeline shifts or prequels to navigate. You can simply pick up the first book and read straight through to the fourth. If you choose to read them as standalones, you won't be lost on the main mysteries, but you will miss out on the subtle character growth and cameos that link the books together.
Spiritual Successor: Sharpe & Donovan
After wrapping up the Boston Police/FBI series in 2010, Carla Neggers launched her highly successful Sharpe & Donovan series in 2011 with Saint's Gate. While Sharpe & Donovan features a new set of protagonists—FBI art crimes expert Emma Sharpe and deep-cover agent Colin Donovan—it serves as a spiritual successor. Both series share the signature Neggers blend of high-stakes romantic suspense, Boston and FBI investigators, and atmospheric settings along the rugged coast of southwest Ireland.
