The Recommended Reading Order
The Boundary universe is straightforward to navigate because its publication order perfectly mirrors the chronological progression of the story. The best way to experience the saga is to start with the original discovery trilogy and then transition into the Castaway sequel trilogy.
For the complete experience, you can also include the alien-POV short story, which fits neatly between the two main arcs.
- Boundary (2006) – The novel that starts it all. Paleontologist Helen Sutter discovers a bizarre fossil at the K-T boundary, leading humanity to ancient alien ruins on the Martian moon Phobos.
- Threshold (2010) – The adventure expands to the asteroid belt as a crew boards the massive ship Nike to study alien biotechnology on Ceres.
- Portal (2013) – The climax of the original trilogy, taking the team to the moons of Jupiter as they try to open a gateway to the stars.
- Skyspark (2013) – A free short story written from the alien ("Bemmie") perspective. It is often referred to as Book 3.5 and serves as an excellent bridge to the next trilogy.
- Castaway Planet (2015) – The start of the sequel trilogy. It shifts focus to a family shipwrecked on a wild, uninhabited planet, emphasizing hard-sci-fi survival.
- Castaway Odyssey (2016) – The survival story continues as the castaways establish a community and face new planetary threats.
- Castaway Resolution (2020) – The concluding chapter of the Castaway trilogy, bringing the stranded humans' saga to a dramatic resolution.
Publication Order vs. Chronological Order
Because the timeline moves forward sequentially from 2006 to 2020, there is no need for complex timeline adjustments. Simply read the books in the order they were published. The spin-off Castaway books are direct narrative extensions of the world and technology introduced in the main Boundary trilogy, though they center on a different cast of characters.
The Co-Authorship and Series Tone
This series is a unique collaboration between alternate-history veteran Eric Flint and hard-sci-fi enthusiast Ryk E. Spoor. Rather than focusing on military conflicts or dystopian tropes, the series celebrates scientific curiosity, engineering problem-solving, and optimistic cooperation. With the passing of Eric Flint in 2022, the series is widely considered complete with the release of Castaway Resolution.
