The Recommended Reading Order
To fully appreciate the escalating rivalries and complex personal dramas of London's legal elite, you should read the Caper Court series in publication order. The books progress chronologically, following the continuous lives and careers of the barristers at 5 Caper Court.
- The Pupil (1994)
- Judicial Whispers (1995)
- An Immoral Code (1998)
- A Hallowed Place (1999)
- A Perfect Obsession (2002)
- Calculating Heart (2004)
- Breath of Corruption (2007)
- Errors of Judgment (2013)
- A Touch of Silk (2020)
Where to Start
You should start directly with the first novel, The Pupil. It introduces Anthony Cross, a talented but penniless young lawyer competing for a highly sought-after tenancy at 5 Caper Court, and establishes Leo Davies, the charming, bisexually active, and ethically fluid Queen's Counsel who becomes the central anchor of the series' drama.
Chronological Caveats & Practical Guidance
Fortunately, there are no complicated timeline jumps, prequels, or parallel timelines. The story flows straight forward from the mid-1990s through to 2020. However, because the relationships are highly serialized, skipping any book will make it difficult to follow the evolving domestic soap opera and professional shifting of allegiances within the chambers.
Spin-offs and Co-authored Books
There are no spin-offs, tie-in novellas, or co-authored entries in this universe. Caro Fraser, drawing from her real-life career as a commercial barrister, wrote the series entirely on her own. Following her passing in 2020, the final novel A Touch of Silk serves as the definitive ending to the Caper Court saga.
