The Recommended Reading Path
If you want to experience the full emotional weight of Jennifer L. Armentrout’s gargoyle-and-demon universe, the best way to read the books is by combining the original Dark Elements trilogy and its follow-up spin-off series, The Harbinger. While the main series focuses on the half-demon heroine Layla, the spin-off shifts focus to Trinity Marrow and Zayne (a key character from the original books). Reading them in order of release keeps the timeline coherent and avoids major character spoilers.
Here is the recommended reading path:
- White Hot Kiss (The Dark Elements, Book 1)
- Bitter Sweet Love (The Dark Elements, Novella 0.5)
- Stone Cold Touch (The Dark Elements, Book 2)
- Every Last Breath (The Dark Elements, Book 3)
- Storm and Fury (The Harbinger, Book 1)
- Rage and Ruin (The Harbinger, Book 2)
- Grace and Glory (The Harbinger, Book 3)
The Dark Elements Trilogy Breakdown
The core series follows Layla, a seventeen-year-old girl who is half-demon and half-gargoyle (known in this world as Wardens). Wardens are stone gargoyles sworn to protect humanity and hunt down demons. Layla lives among the Wardens, but her half-demon nature makes her a constant outsider. To make things more complicated, her kiss can steal the soul of anyone who possesses one—which means kissing humans or Wardens is strictly off-limits.
White Hot Kiss (2014)
This is where the story begins. Layla is trying to fit in with her adoptive Warden family and pinning after Zayne, the gorgeous Warden she is forbidden to touch. Her world is turned upside down when she meets Roth, a tattoos-and-leather-clad Prince of Hell who claims to know the truth about her heritage. This book establishes the famous supernatural love triangle and introduces the complex politics between the Warden Council and the demons of Hell.
Stone Cold Touch (2014)
Following the dramatic events of the first book, Layla’s powers begin to change, making her more dangerous than ever. She tries to find stability by growing closer to Zayne, but the return of Roth forces her to confront her feelings once again. Meanwhile, a dangerous new threat known as a Lilin—a demon born of a human and a demon—is unleashed, threatening to tear both worlds apart.
Every Last Breath (2015)
The final book in the trilogy raises the stakes to an apocalyptic level. Layla must step into her true power to help stop the Lilin from destroying everything she loves. She is also forced to make a definitive choice between her two love interests, Zayne and Roth, wrapping up the love triangle once and for all.
The Harbinger Trilogy Breakdown (Spin-off Series)
Set in the same universe, The Harbinger is a direct continuation of the world, focusing on Zayne’s story after the events of Every Last Breath. It introduces a new protagonist, Trinity Marrow, a girl with a unique and dangerous secret who must team up with Zayne to prevent a massive threat from destroying the Wardens and humanity alike.
Storm and Fury (2019)
Trinity Marrow has spent her life hiding in a remote Warden compound due to her rare abilities. When a mysterious enemy starts targeting gargoyles, a group of Wardens—including Zayne—arrives to protect her. The chemistry between Trinity and Zayne is instant, but secrets on both sides complicate their alliance.
Rage and Ruin (2020)
Trinity and Zayne work together to stop the Harbinger, a deadly entity that continues to murder Wardens and demons. As they train together and fight side-by-side, their bond deepens, but they are forced to deal with strict laws, personal sacrifices, and a shocking betrayal that leaves Zayne's fate hanging in the balance.
Grace and Glory (2021)
The explosive finale of the spin-off trilogy. Trinity and Zayne must face the ultimate battle against the Harbinger to save their world. The book resolves the overarching plot lines of both series, bringing satisfying closure to the characters who have populated this universe since 2014.
Publication Order vs. Chronological Order
In terms of publication order, the prequel novella Bitter Sweet Love was actually released in December 2013, a few months before White Hot Kiss hit the shelves in February 2014. Chronologically, the events of Bitter Sweet Love also take place before White Hot Kiss.
However, Bitter Sweet Love does not focus on Layla. Instead, it tells the story of Jasmine and Dez, two minor Warden characters who appear in the main series. Dez returns to the compound after a mysterious three-year absence to win back Jasmine, who forces him to spend seven days proving his loyalty.
Because it focuses on secondary characters, you do not need to read it first to understand the main plot. Many fans prefer starting directly with White Hot Kiss to dive straight into Layla’s narrative, and then reading the novella either as a break between books or as a companion piece later.
What to Know Before You Start
Before diving into the books, here are a few things that will help you appreciate the series:
- Urban Fantasy Lore: Jennifer L. Armentrout flips traditional mythology by turning gargoyles into the protectors of humanity (Wardens) and demons into complex characters who aren't purely evil. Do not expect standard depiction of gargoyle lore here!
- A Classic Love Triangle: The central romance of the first three books features a very prominent love triangle between Zayne (the sweet, protective childhood friend) and Roth (the bad-boy demon prince). If you love tension and high romantic stakes, this series is a perfect fit.
- Crossover Connections: While you can read The Harbinger on its own, it is highly recommended to read The Dark Elements first. Characters from the first series, including Layla and Roth, make appearances in the spin-off, and Zayne’s emotional arc in the spin-off is much more rewarding if you know his history.
- Bonus Scenes: If you are a dedicated fan, Armentrout has released several bonus scenes on her official website, including key moments from White Hot Kiss and Stone Cold Touch written from Roth's point of view, as well as a scene from Zayne's perspective.
