To clear her name and secure her future, Amy must find the real killer with the help of her supportive family and quirky townsfolk.
2. Silence of the Jams (2017)
Now the proud owner of the Down South Café, Amy is finding her footing as a business owner. The café is thriving, but tragedy strikes when a local resident is poisoned. With the finger of suspicion pointed toward the café's kitchen, Amy has no choice but to dive back into sleuthing to protect her business, her staff, and her reputation in the community.
3. Honey-Baked Homicide (2017)
Food and murder collide once again when a local beekeeper is found dead. Amy's investigation leads her into a sticky situation involving local rivalries, sweet secrets, and a murderer who wants Amy to mind her own business. This installment emphasizes the importance of community and features even more delicious food descriptions.
4. Apples and Alibis (2019)
Autumn brings the local farmer's market to the forefront of Winter Garden, but it also brings a fresh wave of trouble. A delivery gone wrong turns into a murder scene, and Amy is caught in the middle of a rivalry between local vendors. She must peel back the layers of deception to figure out who is hiding a deadly secret.
5. Fruit Baskets and Holiday Caskets (2020)
In this festive holiday mystery, the town of Winter Garden is gearing up for the Christmas season. However, the cheer is cut short when a body is discovered in a holiday display. Amy has to balance cooking for holiday crowds and tracking down a killer who wants to ruin the town's celebrations.
6. Truffles and Tragedy (2021)
Amy faces a sweet but dangerous challenge when a mystery unfolds around a local chocolate-making endeavor. A murder occurs, and the clue trail is as rich and complex as the dark truffles served at the café. Amy has to keep her wits about she searches for a suspect with a taste for murder.
7. Pickled to Death (2022)
Although it is technically a novella, this story is a critical and highly entertaining entry in the series. The plot centers on Aunt Bess, who enters a county fair's pickle competition hoping to defeat the reigning champion, the "Big Dill." When the champion is found dead—bashed over the head with a jar of pickles—Aunt Bess becomes the number-one suspect. Amy must step in to rescue her feisty aunt from jail time.
8. Cake and I Scream (2023)
The latest full-length installment finds Amy dealing with sweets and screams. A local bakery connection and a chilling crime mean Amy has to investigate under pressure while managing the daily operations of the Down South Café. It continues the series' signature blend of warm humor, cozy setting, and clever clues.
What to Know Before You Start
Gayle Leeson writes with an authentic understanding of the South, drawing from her own Virginia roots. The fictional town of Winter Garden is a quintessential cozy setting: small, tight-knit, and filled with gossipy but well-meaning neighbors. If you enjoy character-driven stories where the community plays as large a role as the crime, you will feel right at home.
A major highlight of the series is the inclusion of recipes. At the end of the books, Leeson shares instructions for some of the mouthwatering dishes Amy serves at the Down South Café, ranging from comforting biscuits to rich chocolate cake. It is highly recommended not to read these books on an empty stomach!
As for spin-offs, while Gayle Leeson (as Gayle Trent or Amanda Lee) has written other popular cozy series like the Daphne Martin Cake Mysteries and the Embroidery Mysteries, they do not feature crossovers with the Down South Café series. They share the same lighthearted tone and strong, entrepreneurial female leads, making them excellent follow-ups once you finish Amy Flowers' adventures.
