The Recommended Reading Path
The best way to read Ryk Brown’s Frontiers: Saga is in strict publication (and episodic) order. Because the series is structured like a serialized television show, each book functions as an "episode" that directly continues the narrative of the previous installment. Skipping episodes or reading out of order will lead to massive spoilers, missed character development, and confusion regarding the overarching political and military conflicts.
The main storyline is divided into planned five-part arcs, with each part containing exactly 15 episodes. As of 2026, the author has launched the fourth part, keeping readers on track for the grand 75-episode vision. Below is the breakdown of how to read the main series, followed by advice on when to tackle the prequel content.
The Core Storyline: Episode by Episode
Part 1: Discovery (Episodes 1–15)
This is where it all begins. In the year 3472, humanity is slowly recovering from a devastating bio-digital plague. The UES Aurora, Earth’s newest and most technologically advanced starship, is sent on a mission to find technology that can help protect Earth from potential alien threats. When a testing accident jumps them deep into uncharted space, an untested crew must grow up quickly to survive.

What to Know Before You Start: Prequels and Side Stories
In addition to the main line of episodic releases, Ryk Brown has written prequel material that explores the catastrophic events leading up to the 35th-century setting of the main series. Specifically, the story focuses on the "Bio-Digital Plague" that collapsed Earth's high-tech civilization.
The primary prequel work is Fall of the Core, which originally started in 2015 as a serialized set of flash-fiction novellas labeled Fall of the Core: Netcast Zero. In 2022, Brown expanded and compiled this material into a full-length, 150,000-word novel titled Fall of the Core (labeled as Book 1 of the Frontiers Saga Tie-In series). It follows a freelance reporter, Hanna Bohl, as she investigates the initial outbreak of the plague in the 25th century.
Where should you read Fall of the Core? Readers generally have two options:
- The Publication Order (Recommended): Read it after you have finished Part 1: Discovery. Reading the prequel after Part 1 gives you the context of what Earth looks like in the future, making the tragedy of its fall in the prequel much more impactful, without spoiling the mysteries surrounding the plague in the early books.
- The Chronological Order: Read it first. While this sets up the timeline linearly, some fans feel that beginning with the prequel spoils the sense of wonder, discovery, and historical mystery that the crew of the Aurora experiences during the first 15 episodes of the main series.
Practical Reader Advice
Because the books are written in a serialized format, they are relatively short, fast-paced, and end on frequent cliffhangers. This makes the series highly suitable for binging. However, because of the sheer quantity of books, keeping track of the large cast of characters and political factions is essential. The audiobooks, narrated by Jeffrey Kafer, are highly praised by the fan community for bringing the diverse cast to life with distinct voices, helping listeners easily follow the complex military space operations.
