The Recommended Reading Path
For the best reading experience, it is highly recommended to read the Hanne Wilhelmsen series in publication order. Anne Holt’s series is not just a collection of standalone police procedurals; it is a sprawling, decades-long character study. Hanne starts as a fiercely private, closeted police officer in Oslo, keeping her personal life separate from her colleagues. Over the course of thirteen novels, she undergoes major life milestones, profound tragedies, and a career-ending injury that leaves her paralyzed. Reading the books out of order will spoil these major character developments and can cause significant confusion about her physical and emotional status.
The Hanne Wilhelmsen Books in Publication Order
Here is the complete chronological list of the Hanne Wilhelmsen novels, including their original Norwegian publication years and English translation titles. Please note that the final three books have not yet been widely released in English.
- Blind Goddess (1993) - Hanne investigates a drug dealer's murder, uncovering a web of systemic corruption linking Oslo's underworld to political elites.
- Blessed Are Those Who Thirst (1993) - Set during a suffocating Oslo heatwave, Hanne investigates a series of brutal assaults and a missing person case, highlighting issues of societal violence and justice.
- Death of the Demon (1995) - A gritty look at the child welfare system, where Hanne investigates the murder of a foster home director and the suspicious behavior of the children.
- The Lion's Mouth (1997) - Co-authored with Berit Reiss-Andersen, this political thriller focuses on the shocking assassination of the Norwegian Prime Minister.
- Dead Joker (1999) - A brutal double murder leads to a complex legal case. This is a critical turning point for Hanne, as her partner Cecilie Vibe dies of cancer, sending Hanne into deep grief and exile.
- No Echo (2000) - Co-authored with Berit Reiss-Andersen, this book finds Hanne returning from her self-imposed exile in Italy to solve the murder of a prominent chef.
- Beyond the Truth (2003) - Hanne investigates a mass killing in a wealthy family. In a dramatic climax, Hanne is shot in the spine, resulting in permanent paralysis.
- 1222 (2007) - Trapped in a snowbound mountain hotel after a train derailment, a retired, wheelchair-bound Hanne must solve a classic locked-room mystery.
- Odd Numbers / Offline (2015) - A bomb blast at the Islamic Council offices in Oslo draws a reclusive Hanne back into investigative work from the confines of her home.

- Twelve Untamed Horses (2023) - Published in Norwegian as Tolv utemte hester, this Riverton Prize-winning novel follows Hanne as she lives in a secluded cabin and investigates a dark mystery involving a local boy.
- Diamonds and Rust (2025) - Published in Norwegian as Diamanter og rust, this is the thirteenth and final novel in the series, bringing Hanne Wilhelmsen's long journey to a close.
Key Collaborations and the Hanne Wilhelmsen Universe
Two novels in the series, The Lion's Mouth and No Echo, were co-authored with Berit Reiss-Andersen. Reiss-Andersen is a prominent Norwegian attorney, former State Secretary for the Minister of Justice under Anne Holt, and chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Their collaborative novels are known for their exceptionally realistic legal details and sharp critiques of political bureaucracy. Additionally, Hanne Wilhelmsen exists in a shared literary universe with Holt's other famous series. Hanne makes a crossover appearance in Madam President (also published as Death in Oslo), which is the third book in the Johanne Vik and Yngvar Stubo series.
Practical Reader Advice and the Translation Order Gap
English-speaking readers often experience confusion because the series was translated out of order. The eighth book, 1222, was published in English in 2010, long before several of the early novels were translated. As a result, many readers first met Hanne as a retired, wheelchair-bound investigator before they had the chance to read about her early career as an active field detective. If you want to understand her back-story, her relationships, and the tragedy of losing Cecilie, you should source the early books first. However, if you prefer a self-contained, Agatha Christie-style mystery, 1222 works remarkably well as a standalone entry point, provided you do not mind spoilers about Hanne's physical condition.
Television Adaptation: Blind Spot
In early 2025, Amazon Prime Video premiered a television adaptation of the series titled Blind Spot (original Swedish title: Blindspar). The four-part Scandinavian drama stars Ida Engvoll as Hanne Wilhelmsen. The plot is based directly on the novel 1222, following Hanne as she investigates a string of murders at a remote hotel after her train from Stockholm to Narvik is stranded by an avalanche. The series co-stars Pal Sverre Hagen as a doctor who assists Hanne in her investigation.
