The Recommended Reading Order
If you are planning to join Navy SEAL Adam Cain on his chaotic journey across the cosmos, the recommended reading path is simple: follow the publication order. The narrative is linear, tracking Adam's growth from a bewildered human abductee to a legendary galactic force. Reading out of order will spoil major character deaths, shifting political alliances, and the evolution of the galaxy's power structures.
The complete journey spans three distinct series that should be read in this sequence:
- The Human Chronicles Saga (Books 1–29) – The core series that introduces Adam Cain and details humanity's explosive entry onto the galactic stage.
- The Adam Cain Saga / Chronicles (Books 1–9) – A direct continuation that follows Adam and his closest companions on targeted high-stakes adventures after the main saga's climax.
- The Human Chronicles Legacy (Books 1–6) – A follow-up series focusing on the next generation and new threats while keeping classic characters in play.
Phase 1: The Human Chronicles Saga (1–29)
This is where it all begins. In 2011, T.R. Harris introduced readers to a universe where humans possess physical capabilities far exceeding those of the older, softer alien races. Since the story builds continuously, you should read these 29 books in the order they were published:
- The Fringe Worlds (2011) – Adam Cain is abducted by aliens and quickly discovers his physical superiority.
- Alien Assassin (2012) – Adam adapts to his new life, taking on mercenary work to survive.
- The War of Pawns (2012) – Earth becomes a pawn in a massive galactic conflict.
- The Tactics of Revenge (2012) – The fight becomes personal as Adam seeks vengeance.
- The Legend of Earth (2013) – Word of a mysterious, hyper-lethal home planet begins to spread.
- Cain's Crusaders (2013) – Adam assembles a human strike force to take the fight to the enemy.
- The Apex Predator (2013) – The galaxy learns why humans are at the top of the food chain.
- A Galaxy to Conquer (2014) – A major campaign pits human ingenuity against ancient empires.
- The Masters of War (2014) – Humanity cements its reputation as the ultimate military force.
- Prelude to War (2015) – Tensions mount as new factions prepare for an inevitable clash.
- The Unreachable Stars (2015) – The crew ventures into uncharted territories.
- When Earth Reigned Supreme (2016) – Humanity's political and military influence reaches its peak.
- A Clash of Aliens (2016) – Interstellar rivalries boil over into open warfare.
- Battlelines (2016) – New battlefronts emerge as alliances shift.
- The Copernicus Deception (2016) – Adam must untangle a web of secrets and lies.
- Scorched Earth (2016) – A high-stakes defensive struggle to protect the human homeworld.
- Alien Games (2016) – Intrigue and deadly games test the limits of human endurance.
- The Cain Legacy (2017) – The name Cain becomes synonymous with galactic disruption.
- The Andromeda Mission (2017) – A voyage beyond the Milky Way opens up new frontiers.
- Last Species Standing (2017) – A brutal war of attrition threatens entire civilizations.
- Invasion Force (2017) – Adam leads a counter-invasion to neutralize an existential threat.
- Force of Gravity (2017) – Scientific mysteries and military tactics collide.
- Mission Critical (2018) – A desperate race against time to prevent a galactic catastrophe.
- The Lost Universe (2018) – The crew discovers remnants of a long-forgotten cosmic past.
- The Immortal War (2018) – Ancient beings throw the galaxy into chaos.
- Destroyer of Worlds (2019) – Adam is forced to use devastating force to keep the peace.
- Phantoms (2019) – Unseen enemies manipulate events from the shadows.
- Terminus Rising (2019) – A climatic buildup to the end of the era.
- The Last Aris (2019) – The epic finale of the original 29-book sequence.
Phase 2: The Adam Cain Saga (1–9)
Initially launched as The Adam Cain Chronicles, this 9-book series picks up directly after the events of The Last Aris. Rather than focusing on massive fleet-level wars, these books offer tighter, more character-driven adventures focusing on Adam Cain, Riyad Tarazi, and Sherri Valentine. Read them in this order:
- The Dead Worlds (2019)
- Empires (2019)
- Battle Plan (2020)
- Galactic Vortex (2020)
- Dark Energy (2020)
- Universal Law (2020)
- The Formation Code (2020)
- The Quantum Enigma (2020)
- Children of the Aris (2020)
Phase 3: The Human Chronicles Legacy (1–6)
Published between 2021 and 2022, the Legacy series is the latest installment in the universe. It bridges the gap between classic characters and new conflicts, expanding the lore and keeping the fast-paced, humorous tone alive. Follow this order:
- Raiders of the Shadow (2021)
- War of Attrition (2021)
- Secondary Protocol (2021)
- Lifeforce: An Adam Cain Adventure (2022)
- Battle Formation (2022)
- Allied Command (2022)
What to Know Before You Start
T.R. Harris’s books are fast, fun, and unpretentious. Inspired by classic space operas and military science fiction, Harris set out to write stories that celebrate human resilience without getting bogged down in heavy social commentary or overly complex scientific jargon. The fundamental conceit of the series is that gravity on Earth is much stronger than on most other planets, making humans physically stronger, faster, and far more durable than the alien races they encounter.
Expect plenty of action, military tactics, space exploration, and a healthy dose of humor. Adam Cain is the quintessential "alien with an attitude" from the perspective of the galaxy, relying on both his physical advantages and his clever, unorthodox human thinking to outsmart technologically superior alien empires.
Chronological vs. Publication Order & Caveats
Because the spin-off series were written and published in chronological sequence, there is no need to jump back and forth between different timelines. The publication order perfectly mirrors the chronological progression of the universe. However, readers should note that the author has also written other series set in similar military sci-fi universes, such as Human for Hire, REV Warriors, and Jason King: Agent to the Stars. While they share the same DNA and thematic elements, they are distinct stories and do not need to be integrated into your Human Chronicles reading order.
